Changes in pumping?

My DD is 8 1/2 months and I am a SAHM.  I had a great pumping schedule through 5 months.  However, I did not need to have as many bottles since I'm home, so I  stopped pumping except randomly to keep practicing bottles.  She currently has no issues getting what she needs while nursing, which is 5 times a day and she has solids 3 times a day.

However, we have a few evening events coming up so I'm trying to get back into my pumping routine.  When I pump now, I get practically nothing, maybe an ounce (I used to get a bottle per session)!!  Has anyone else experienced this??  I'm going to try to pump after every time I nurse and in between if necessary.  It's just frustrating b/c it used to be so easy and now I'm struggling with it.

TIA!

Re: Changes in pumping?

  • I'm also a stay at home mom and some times I work from home if I have to. I only pump when I wake up or in the middle of the night if my baby boy doesn't nurse and when I wake up engorge.  But if I have classes that day I pump when I wake up because I get the most milk in the morning or in the MOTN. You can pump in the morning and put it in the fridge for it to be ready for that evening. Power pumping helps a lot, and staying super hydrated. Also I know it might be a little hard but pumping in the middle of the night is helpful. Also oatmeal and apricots in the morning help me also! Keep us updated mama and hope this helps!

  • Thank you!!  I've been trying to drink water like a fish!  I will try the oatmeal and get some apricots :) I tried pumping in the MOTN and got about an ounce.  I'm bummed it's not like it used to be, but I realize her nursing has clearly changed.  I was thinking of maybe trying fenugreek?  I'm not sure though since I know she gets what she needs, it's just the extra for the bottle.

I will keep trying your suggestions, thanks!!
  • Mother's milk tea, fenugreek, water, oatmeal. I've been exclusively pumping since 8 weeks, he will be 9 months on the 23rd of this month and we've made it without supplementing! We are just now starting to supplement bc we are taking a vacation in june (just hubby and i) and I won't have a full freezer stock to get him thru only on breastmilk. When I see a dip in supply I drink the tea and take the fenugreek a few days and I catch back up pretty quickly. The fenugreek can make some babies gassy from what I've read, just fyi!
  • Fenugreek worked great for me.  I used the tincture instead of capsules.

All great things to know, thank you!!  I'm going to try the tea and fenugreek.  I will definitely keep an eye out for extra gas with dd.
  • I'm wondering if my body knows the difference in stimulation between dd nursing and pumping, if that makes sense?
  • I saw online that they also sell natural fenugreek cookies, teas and fenugreek bars also. And I was also wondering the same thing, if our bodies knew the difference between pumping and when our babies are nursing..
  • I think it must know the difference.  When she's done I can still squeeze a good stream sometimes so I jump on the pump and then nothing..I'll keep trying and we'll figure it out!  I'm just glad this dd loves to eat solids!!  My first dd was not interested in food until 9-10 months!!!
  • Also....idk if this is relevant to you or not, but I haven't had my period return yet. But my doctor said my hormones could be normalizing now and preparing for the return which would explain why every month around the same time I see a slight drop in milk production as well as a change in acceptance from the babe. Apparently our cycle changes the taste of the milk to more salty than sweet and you don't produce as much at that time of the month due to the rise in estrogen.

It helps for me to time it at least an hour after nursing and only after first nursing session. I did this on weekends and spring break (teacher) and have about a day's supply in freezer

Unfortunately, I started getting my period back just shy of my daughter turning 8 weeks (ugh!!!).. so it's been regular for a while.  You are right, it does change for me when it's coming and that was when I was trying to pump.  Now that it's over I'm going to continue trying and see what results I get.  Thankfully the events I'm trying to get milk far are a little bit a part, so I can work on getting more for the next time.

Good idea, thank you :) !  She slept through the night last night and only nursed on one side so I pumped after and got a decent amount from the side she was too full to take!  Hopefully I'll get another session like that and I should be good for the first event!
