Spoiled Frozen breastmilk??

I go back to work tomorrow so I dipped into my freezer stash to make LO's bottles for daycare tmrw. I pulled out 7 lanisoh bags (3oz ea.) to defrost. Two of the bags had holes in the bottom and were leaking so I threw them out. The other 5 smelled freezer burned and when I tasted the milk (I know - gross) compared to some fresh milk I had in the fridge, it tastes horrible! I ended up throwing them out too :( . I hate wasting the milk that I've worked so hard to save up. They were only from 2/9-2/16 so they should have still been good. Has this happened to anyone? Do you think the milk is bad? I'm thinkng ab calling lanisoh tomorrow to complain ab the bags with the holes.

I did a test run a few weeks ago mixing an ounce of thawed with 3 ounces of cold fresh milk and LO ate it fine but then screamed bloody murder about 45 minutes later and was so gassy.  I froze in 3 ounce portions and I have probably 50 bags.  I feel awful throwing it away but if she has that reaction I don't want to give them to her.  I know that milk changes when it's frozen but I thought mixing it with fresh milk would cut down on any issues.  I've also wondered about a lipase issue.

  • Hmm my LO eats my milk that has been frozen all the time and has had no problems. I haven't tasted it though.
  • It does smell (and taste) different but my LO drinks it without a problem. Give it a try! I want to cry for you at the thought of throwing it all away
  • How did it taste? Some moms have high lipase which can cause frozen milk to taste off. I believe some add just  drop of alcohol free vanilla extract to it. You can also scald the milk. I'm sorry you had to throw it away! As for the bags, I've heard nothing but negativity towards the lansinoh bags. Target brand have be great!

I use the lansinoh bags and always defrost them in a ziplock bag as I have also heard they often leak/have holes when defrosting!
  • I haven't had to thaw any milk yet but I'm so glad I saw this about the holes in the bags! I liked them bc they freeze flat where as the Medela ones were bulky. Does that maybe effect the taste of the milk? The holes I mean. Does it get like freezer burn? I will be pissed!!

i use the lanisoh bags and have exclusively for 3 months. Haven't had one leak! I'm constantly filling them up and taking them out too so I've been thru a hundred or so by now!
  • Good idea about defrosting in a ziplock bag, I will try that! It was really hard to throw away all that milk, I wanted to cry. But I was so worried ab sending him to daycare with bottles he might reject that I went ahead and threw them out. I'm going to do a test run with some this weekend to see if he will eat them. As for the ones with holes, I didn't even try to use those, I just dumped them as soon as I saw they were leaking. :( it was sad lol
  • I noticed that if my frozen milk bags get knocked around too much they tend to get tiny holes. Of course I notice this when I'm getting milk ready for daycare.  I just thaw it out more and put it in a different bag...my son eats it fine. He's already over 16 lbs at 3 months. He also had no problem eating breastmilk my neighbor donated to me when I was having trouble with pumping before I came back to work. I would say it's probably ok but that's just my opinion.
