2 month check up shots

We go in Monday for her 2 month check up. She is going to get a bunch of shots.  I have heard giving them a pain reliever before the shots can help ease the pain.  I cant find dosing for under 12 lbs. Does anyone know what dosing for a 8lb baby of ibuprofen? Should i give her ibuprofen before the shots? Help!

Re: 2 month check up shots

  • I would call the pediatrician, especially about dosing

  • Most pediatricians do not recomend giving medicine prior to thier shots. In reality the initial shot hurts but they quickly forget about it. With both my kids I can pick them o immediately after and comfort them to stop crying quickly. I also know other moms who nurse immediately after too for comfort. I would recommend considering what you are dressing baby in that day. I always dress my LO back up in all his clothes just leaving his legs exposed for the shots so that we can move on with our day and I don't have to worry about getting him dressed while he's upset. Before you leave ask the pediatrician for a dosage chart just in case your LO spikes a fever overnight. Most babies don't and are perfectly fine.

  • I was told to not give it before and only give it after if necessary. My DD was fine 2 seconds after the shots. I nursed her, put her pants on and we left. Ask your doctor what the dosage will be after you get an accurate weigh and then you will know for future reference.

  • You can lessen the effectiveness of the vaccines by giving Tylenol beforehand. Don't do it.
  • My doctor told me not to give tempra or any other pain reliever beforehand and to only use afterwards if she developed a fever of more than 100 degrees. DD cried for a few seconds and was fine afterwards, her legs were a little sore for the first day but certainly not enough to need pain relievers

I've been told my doc to give paracetamol before the injections as the meningitis jab gives a fever often
  • This is the chart that was given to us by both the hospital and our boys' doctor.

  • Ibuprofen/Motrin/Advil is not safe for a baby under 6 months old regardless of weight. Do not give it.

Yes, just what the chart says under the ibuprofen section.

  • My baby got his first round of shots at 6 weeks (he's on an accelerate schedule because we are moving out of the country) and he did just fine! Screamed for maybe 5 seconds. He needed Tylenol later that night when he fever was 100.9 and then by morning his temp was 98 and he was fine. My Peds office said not to give Tylenol until the fever remained over 100.4 so that it didn't reduce effectiveness of vaccines
  • We didn't give anything before the shots, the pediatrician gave us a prescription for Tylenol in case baby got a fever after the shots. Luckily he took his shots like a champ and didn't get a fever.
  • LO got her shots today and 3 hours after she started screaming and cried inconsolably. Ofcourse stupid me didn't get infant Tylenol before she got her shots just incase. Thank goodness my neighbor had some until I could get to the store. She didn't get a fever, just a bit of swelling and screaming.
  • Have any of your LOs become constipated after their 2 month shots? DD has only pooped on her own twice since getting hers a week and a half ago. Before that, she was having 3-4 a day like clockwork. Pear juice hasn't worked so we're going to try prune tonight.
  • We just had my baby's 2 month check up yesterday and when i asked my ped about getting tylenol before hand he didn't even blink an eye and said he could give it to him there.  Right before the shots he gave my LO 2 ml of tylenol.  My baby cried like i have never heard him cry during the shots and it was hard to watch but breastfeeding immediately after helped a lot.  Another tip, my mom recommended giving him a bath to reduce the chance of fever.  I dont know if thats true but it at least kept my baby calm in the evening and allowed him to return back to his night routine.
  • My ped. Said it's fine to give Tylenol beforehand. She had an explanation about why she didn't worry about decreasing its effectiveness, but I don't remember what it was.  With my first I didn't give him anything, he was fine seconds after shots when I nursed him and then he took like a three hour nap. However, he woke up from that and screamed his head off for twenty mins until Tylenol kicked in. Some babies react more than others.
