Exclusive Pumpers

I Exclusively pump for my daughter she is 3 months old. She latched as soon as she was born and had a great latch. She had to stay two nights in hospital without me so I pumped and since she came home I just continued to pump because issues with mastitis and milk blisters etc also gives daddy bonding to bottle feed. Anyhow how do you exclusive pumpers feed baby while your out and about. I have single serve packets of formula for when we are out and about. I also carry a manual hand pump in the diaper bag so I can relieve myself when I'm getting full and feed her that if need be. Do you let baby latch I've wanted to try while out but I've just had so many issues and am always sore in the boob area I would be in agony while she feeds and worry what if she got thrush from broken nipples. What do you moms do to feed baby while out and about.

Re: Exclusive Pumpers

  • I EP as well and I fill a travel coffee mug with hot water and put the bottle in their to keep it warm. I also use a nipple shield to help her latch and avoid becoming to sore from cracked nipples and such.

  • I let him breastfeed while out for the day. It slows me down for sure but it let's us get shit done, considering my little guy eats every two hours...
  • Same as pp. I have a thermos of hot water I can heat a bottle up in of previously expressed milk.

I'll usually pump right before walking out the door and just bring that bottle as is since you can leave breast milk at room temp for 5/6 hours and also bring a cold one from the fridge as back up. But we're usually not out long enough somewhere where we can't access warm water to heat a bottle. We also have the prepackaged formula singles in case my husband gets stuck without breast milk.  In a pinch I will throw LO on a boob but it doesn't happen very often when we're out and stuck without something.
  • I bring a bag of milk and a thermos. I was out last week and,mom fail, forgot the bottle so I tried to get her to latch and it was one of the most traumatizing experiences. she freaked out that the flow wasn't to her liking and I had to drive home with her screaming in the back seat. I was bawling right along with her by the time I got home.
  • I pump right before leaving the house and take the bottle with us. It's good for 5 hours and honestly we haven't really been out for a long period of time yet.
  • I usually make sure I pump before leaving the house as well just so I'm not full while we are out and about. She usually eats before we leave anywhere but she's an eater and loves to eat say she takes a short nap she will want to eat right when she wakes. I usually do bring a prepared bottle but i thought breastmilk doesnt stay that good that long I'll have to reread up on some of the packets i got. I may have to try the hot thermis. Thank you ladies.
  • I do as PP said and pump before leaving and bring that bottle. Also I purchased the car adapter for my Medela PISA so I just pump in car if I need to.
  • I pump before leaving and always bring 2 bottles with. He eats them at room temp so no need to heat. I bring a cold bag with an ice pack to keep the last one cold. He hasn't latched since the hospital so I don't fool with it at all. I'm also on a 8-124-8-1am schedule now for pumping so I work around that too.

Before your current pump schedule did you pump more often and if so how did decreasing pumps effect your supply? I currently do 8 a day but need to go down to 5 or 6 when I go back to work and I am wondering what to expect.

I pumped when he ate until 11 weeks. Which was 8-9 times. Then I slowly cut it  to 7 then 6. I got super engorged but dealt with it. It took about 2 weeks for my body to get it. But even now I will feel a let down after 2.5-3 hours. DS is 15 weeks today. I slept with a cut up newborn diaper in my shirt for the first week. It helped my sheets. And a tiny bit of hand expression for comfort. But not still signaling your body for milk.

I have always ways had an over supply  so I went from freezing 3 8oz bags a day to freezing 1. Which is fine for me bc I don't need it. I was really strict until 11 weeks and stuck to it. Now it's so nice to not be hooked up all day. I literally feel free lol!
