TTC After a Loss

baby aspirin? Do you take it?

I've had 2 separate OBs  (seen during 2 separate losses) tell me to take baby aspirin. The first time it was mentioned I was too upset to ask questions about it and the second dr that mentioned it blazed through a very technical explanation of the reasoning behind it ( he lost me after saying something about my body attacking the placenta or something?)

Anyway, now that the fog from loss has started to clear, I was curious if anyone has a dummies version of the theory behind it and does anyone currently take it?

TIA

Re: baby aspirin? Do you take it?

  • Do you have MTHFR mutation or another clotting issue?

I take it daily bc I have MTHFR mutation (homozygous 677), so I'll take it forever even when not ttc.

  • Not that I'm aware of. That is another reason why I'm asking. I felt like that advice was just sort of thrown at me willy nilly with the it-can't- hurt- mentality.
  • -TW, other pregnancies mentioned-

I'm confused how it would have anything to do with your body attacking the placenta. It's usually to help prevent clots. I just started taking it with my last pregnancy after I got my bfp bc I got my MTHFR results the same week. I never took it with my 3 prior pregnancies (one of which was a loss).

  • Yeah that confused me too. But, I swear that is what he said. I wonder if he was talking out of his butt? This was just an OB, not a RE.

So it is to prevent clots?

  • In my case, my hematologist and OB recommended I take it daily to keep my blood just a little bit thinner, which can help prevent clots.  We all agreed it can't hurt anything at this point, whether I am pregnant or not.

  • @iceandsnowflakes29 I started taking baby aspirin daily a month or two before getting pregnant. It was recommended in a book I read called Making Babies, where they talked about a study that showed that women taking daily baby aspirin had thicker uterine linings due to increased blood flow. So I take it to help me get pregnant, but I believe the main reason to take it while pregnant is to prevent clotting.

  • Okay, thanks for the input @MWoodside and @AL_TwinCities. I did google this but, I value your input more than Dr. Google :)
  • I have the MTHFR c667 mutation with only one copy and I have to be on a daily asprin regime while TTC and then lovenox shots everyday as soon as I am pregnant. Mthfr is rather common so it wouldn't hurt to get tested for it, however many doctors aren't familiar with it. My OB is a specialist with mthfr and has done group studies with pregnant women. As for why they say baby asprin daily it all has to do with your blood getting to thick.
  • I have antiphospholipid syndrome which makes me prone to miscarriage and blood clots. (Thick and sticky blood). I have been taking baby aspirin daily for two months.  However, I am currently going through another miscarriage so it obviously wasn't enough.  I go to a hemetology specialist tomorrow and will go from there.  I have heard mixed reviews on if baby aspirin should be taken if there are no known blood issues.  If there are none that you know of, I would specifically ask the doctor why they went you to take it and don't let them gloss over it.  I know in the past I've just wanted a baby so badly I'd do anything I read about on the internet that might help, and I have wound up screwing up my body and making things harder.  I am very cautious now and only do what my doctor says is ok.  I had extensive testing before my doctor told me to take the baby aspirin!
  • I was thinking about this more, specifically @AL_TwinCities comment about the thicker lining. My period has been AWFUL since my last loss. I hadn't been able to connect why, and now I'm wondering if it's the baby aspirin b/c I started taking it right after my BFP (coincidentally when I found out about my MTHFR mutation). I am thinking it has to be the baby aspirin b/c nothing else has changed other than aging in general obviously. Has anyone else who takes baby aspirin noticed a shift in the heaviness of their cycles? I feel like I bleed way more, have awful cramps and just generally a sucky time, especially during the first 2 days.

  • *TW- children mentioned*

@Littlemagen&ben, out of curiosity, is Lovenox standard protocol for all MTHFR patients your Dr treats? Or your specific mutation? No one will Rx me Lovenox since I've had 2 children before I knew about my mutation.

  • @mwoodside just butting in to say that my periods have been super heavy and awful the first couple of days since my losses. I do not take baby aspirin. I have my yearly exam next month, so I plan to ask my doctor about it then, but I am guessing he will just tell me it's from the losses. The odd thing is it started about the third cycle post loss and has stayed consistently bad. Fun, fun.
  • Mine hasn't been heavier since taking baby aspirin.  It's only been two months though and one month was a loss so that was an off month anyway.
  • As an interesting note to the aspirin question... I had to sign a 6 page consent/contract yesterday with my RE. On the front page was a list of things that I should not do and one was that I would not take aspirin or aspirin like medications during treatment unless specifically directed by my doctor. I don't take it regularly so I didn't ask about it, but thought it was curious after the fact. Maybe it is in the chance I get pregnant, but who knows.
