3+ Hours of Consistent Braxton Hicks??

Hi ladies~ Question here. I am now 34 weeks pregnant. There have recently been two occasions where I have had consistent Braxton Hicks contractions (or at least what I think are Braxton Hicks).

1) After intercourse I had pretty uncomfortable contractions for somewhere around 3 hours after...quite unpleasant,  but nothing breathtaking.

2) This evening, after we got back from an all day birthing class. I laid down for a nap, felt soreness in my pelvis and a little in the pelvic region of my stomach (low uterus?) After that it has been a good 3 hours since I have been having the contractions.

Has anybody else experienced this? Talked to their doctors? The contractions after sex make more sense to me than the ones I am experiencing now.

I see my doctor in Monday so I will certainly pose the question, but I am super curious as to what other people have been through.

Re: 3+ Hours of Consistent Braxton Hicks??

  • General rule of thumb is if you're having more than 4 Braxton Hicks in an hour, call your dr.

  • I have been having Braxton hicks a lot. Most evenings, and for hours. It's to the point that I can't really do anything in the evening besides sit in my chair. Technically I should have called L&D and they would have made me drive 45 min to check me out, but I know I'm not actually in labor so I haven't called. It's just super annoying to be dealing with this many contractions, I feel helpless when I'm having them so much.
  • I get them pretty much all day-  I've been to L&D twice when they got really painful and rhythmic... unfortunately, some people just get them a lot.
Still though, definitely tell your doc- especially if they are painful or are rhythmic because you need to make sure they are not labor contractions.
  • Same as PP- this is my second pregnancy and I've realized this just how my body does 3rd trimester. I have pretty consistent, timeable contractions nearly every afternoon or evening, starting around 30 weeks both times, and I was still 2 weeks late with my son. If it happens again during office hours you could always go in for an NST, but honestly if you're not hitting the whole 5-1-1 thing I wouldn't be too concerned.
  • I've been having a ton, mainly after a work day, moving around a lot, etc. I have gone in twice to be safe. They ended up putting me on bed rest and nifedipine as needed. Might be overkill, but I'd rather be safe.
If you are concerned, get checked out.

I've been having them since Tuesday. I finally started timing them and they were coming every 5-6 minutes and lasting 55 seconds. I went in to be monitored that night and changed from a 2 to a 3 in the 2 hours between checks. Since my cervix is still thick, they sent me home and my only restriction is no sex until 36 weeks. I was 35w yesterday and I haven't gone more than 20-30 minutes without having one. They have usually every 10 minutes apart now. It's getting uncomfortable and annoying!
  • Were yours lasting all day and night?  Or just for periods of time?
  • call your doctor

  • You need to call your dr as pp have mentioned. I was having contractions 2 min apart Friday night that started at 7 and were consistent for 3.5 hours. The only reason I waited that long was because I had been checked earlier in the day at my ob appt and I know cervical checks can cause irritable uterus. I went to L&D because they tell you to call your dr or go to L&D if you've had more than 5 in an hour. They monitored me, they said my contractions were really strong and were "acting like" true labor contractions but werent dilating me. They sent me home after 5 hours of monitoring and contractions continued every 2 min until yesterday around noon. Just because this is how it was for me, DOES NOT mean this is how it is for you nor does it mean what pp's have experienced is what you're experiencing. If you're having more than 5 contractions in an hour you need to call your dr.

Both day and night. They still are. I talked to my nurse today and she said as long as I'm not in pain with them, then they don't do much anymore. I have to go back if they become painful or I start leaking. Basically I'm a ticking time bomb ..

For my first baby, I started getting them consistently around 30 weeks. I ended up being put on magnesium and given two rounds of the steroid shots for babies lungs. They finally got them to quit two days later, but I was sent home on bed rest and on procardia until 36 weeks. She was born 3 days later.

For or my second child, I very rarely got any BH contractions and he waited to come until his due date.

This pregnancy is definitely similar to my first, I'm just further along this time and they aren't doing anything about them.
