my UA was a weird one. I thought doctors could tell at 11 weeks, the difference. I'm extremely nervous about this. She said it looks like twins but can't tell yet. Performed vaginal ultrasound and everything. Anyone else have this happen??
You're 11 weeks and your doc can't tell if there's one or two babies? Sounds like you didn't understand what she said or you're seeing a totally incompetent doctor.
My doctor isn't very good, we have already had problems. She told me not to drink water.......um, what?? Lol I left not knowing, I'm 35.....this isn't my first, I didn't misunderstand her. She couldn't even tell head, limb.....UA was over in 10mn. I go back next week for UA.....with different doctor. I just didn't know if this ever happened to anyone before. It was disappointing.
maybe you misunderstood. also she probably told you not to drink water before an internal ultrasound which could have led to problems seeing things in this one if you had a full bladder.....you didn't ask questions during the appointment? I would've immediately asked to clarify the one or two comment.
UA equal urine analysis. I think you mean US for ultra sound. You can detect twins at early as 4 weeks and especially 6ish weeks once there is two heartbeats. 1) ask questions. If you don't understand, ask again. 2)if you do not trust your Dr, please get a new one.

sounds like it's time to see another doctor.. ar 11 weeks it would be pretty obvious if there was one or two in there.
Ditto to PP, if your office can't tell whether there are one or two babies in there at 11 weeks (especially with a transvaginal US which doesn't require a full bladder), it sounds like it's time to find a new office. Is it possible that they found 2 babies but aren't sure if one will make it?
My tech very easily located my twins at 5w5d on a transvaginal ultrasound.
Same. And by 11 weeks, even I could definitely tell exactly where each twin was. You need to call and if they cannot confirm the amount of growing children inside your uterus, you should thinking of finding a new set of doctors.
I haven't personally had this happen, however I do know someone who didn't find out she was bearing twins until the second one arrived in the delivery room! The babies heart beats were in sync and the doctor just couldn't see the second one. You were never able to see the second baby from any of the ultrasounds oddly. Luckily both boys were healthy and full term.
Thank you @JavAnn!!!! The same thing has happened multiple times in my family. Some multiples showed early, some didn't hear the second heartbeat, others didn't show until 2nd trimester!
It it has nothing to do with the incompetence of the US tech. I just had a weird US as well, where they thought there may be a possibility of multiples but only one sac was showing transvaginally.
Also, for those who consistently get upset about the questions being asked. Stop saying, "ask your doctor this is not something you should be asking people you don't know etc..." Have you considered the thought that maybe the poster feels that getting another person's opinion will help her determine what she should do next? It isn't a life or death matter for goodness sakes. If she were asking about why she's bleeding or something obvious, only then is that grounds for using that comment.
This is is supposed to be a community where we can come together as women with same or similar circumstances. Let's actually be an encouragement!

OP admitted she wasn't convinced her doctor was very good so yes, they may be incompetent. There were a lot of great ideas of what she should do (the best probably asking her doctor for clarification and/or finding a new OB)and personal occurrences of twins and how their ultrasounds went. OP also handled herself perfectly fine and really didn't need you to WK especially since she wasn't flamed in the slightest. This is an online community where you don't get to dictate responses given. If the tone of the community isn't a fit for you, I suggest finding one that is rather than trying to change one that has been established for quite sometime.

But you SHOULD ask your doctor and not necessarily internet strangers. In OP's case, she REALLY needs a new one, seeing as her dr didn't give her any clear information.
Your thread is a lot different than this one though. You asked about HCG levels and such. Personally, I believed my dr and the u/s tech when they said there was only ONE sac, even though my hormone levels were really high. Yes, I know its possible to not know until much later on in a pregnancy that there are multiples. One of my friends was told she was carrying twins 8 years ago, with average hormone levels. Turns out, come her scheduled c-section as she was already high-risk, there were THREE in there. So yes, it DOES happen. But theres no real way to actually know for sure how many are in there until delivery....
For those who are saying "Some people don't find out, it happens": The technology of ultrasounds has gotten very good in the past decade. The clarity of ultrasounds now are incredibly good as is the training of staff. Most people who tell these stories refer to pregnancies that happened more than 5 years ago. It's not current information.
Twins and multiple pregnancies are classified "high risk" and, depending on the type, need to be monitored closely so diagnosing them is a big part of a sonographer's job. The latest I have heard of recently (>3 years) is 20 weeks but that was because it was their first ultrasound. It is very obvious if there's two. We have seen both twins from 6 weeks.
OP, I hope you've gotten some answers but if it helps, there was no "grey area" by about 8 weeks. Even I could see (with my very untrained eye) that there were two babies. Maybe if they were sharing a sac it could be difficult but you should definitely see 2 babies by 11 weeks. Please get a new doctor if they legitimately didn't know what they were looking at. It will be worse when they need to do measurements etc for your anatomy scan.
Okay, thanks for jumping down my back guys. There is absolutely no reason for that. I didn't say anyone was wrong, I said to give people some slack!
It it is NOT WRONG to get second opinions from a community of women who may have gone through a similar situation.
I wasn't upset at anyone either, or anyone's tones. In fact I am saying what I have seen multiple times on this site, women putting other women down. Whether it be an attitude of 'Don't ask that here ask a professional', or a personal attack. It's ridiculous and doesn't need to happen!
I will say though, thank you for quoting me multiple times, now people can read what I said more than once. It is an important lesson to be learned. I'm just sorry for those of you who took it personally and won't apply it. When it comes down to you asking for help and getting negative responses, I hope you remember this thread.

I know someone personally who had this happen, too. It was my grandma. When you don't qualify these statements with dates, they don't mean much!
What @SisterMaryNapalm said is true, technology has made huge leaps, and these things really aren't missed anymore with the ultrasounds people get these days.
