Going swaddle free?

so my LO is 3 months today, which is when they recommend to start the process of quitting the swaddle. I've depended on that thing and it helps her sleep around 6-7 hours straight at night. When she's set down without being swaddled she startles herself awake within about 10 minutes. any tips or tricks?! I already feel sleep deprived... If she goes less than 6 hours I will turn into a zombie.

Re: Going swaddle free?

  • My son started to resist swaddling at just 4 weeks. His startle reflex was still strong and he was constantly waking himself up. We bought a convertible  Woombie and it's been great. You can do arms in or out and either way it remains snug around the chest and hips. We get a consistent 7-9 hours w it.

  • We are transitioning as well. We have the halo sleep sack swaddle. We started with hand by his face for a few nights then one arm out and now both arms out but still tight in chest. He's almost 12 weeks and his reflexes are def starting to wind down and he's also gotten use to dealing with them when sleeping. Good luck!
  • We just started Merlin's Magic Sleepsuit and our sweet girl slept 8.5 hours in it last night ☺️ It muffles their startle reflex. It's a bit pricey but so worth it!! Good luck!
  • Halo swaddle sleep sack here and love it.  We also tried the Halo wearable blanket (no swaddle part) but it was so gappy in the chest area that when she moved it would cover her nose so that was a big no no.
  • I vote for the baby Merlin magic sleep suit. I started a thread on it bc I wasn't sure what to dress LO in under it. It is pricey, but she slept so long and peaceful last night it was amazing! Check out the thread! Good luck.

We are having daycare help with the transition. She is no longer swaddled at daycare for naps. At home, I have one arm out using the Halo swaddle for her afternoon nap, and she's still fully swaddled at night. I'll keep making little changes until I can brave the night with both arms out. She is such a good sleeper that I'm afraid to ruin a good thing, but I'm not into sleep crutches. We try not to use many sleep aids, as I have a friend that still needs to sleep with a fan (she's 30) and my husband still needs the TV (it's obnoxious). We will see!
  • My little one (12 weeks) rolled over from her back to her belly yesterday so I have to stop swaddling I am going to start with one arm out, and go from there.  Of course all at the same time as needed to wean my 2 year old off the pacifier as per the speech therapist
  • We are using the Halo Sleep Sack. It still allows for us to wrap both of his arms in, but he is able to wiggle his  arms out, if he wants to, so hopefully we can start with 1 arm out soon and make some progress from there.
  • @teachmegs817 we just tried one arm out tonight and she slept for 6 hours in the crib! Usually she wriggles her arms free too
  • This completely. My son is now rolling back to front and front to back all in a matter of a few days and attempting transitioning him out of swaddle feels like I'm back in the newborn days of absolutely no sleep. I use the halo swaddle sack too and I'm trying to just do one arm at a time but even tho he's 16 weeks old his startle reflex is so bad he wakes up so much and is terrible at putting himself back to sleep aka no sleep for me. Hoping with some persistence despite my sleep deprivation it will get better and he will get better at putting himself back to sleep
  • Oh I've been dreading the day! I probably love the swaddle more than he does. But for the past two weeks or so, I've swaddled with arms out and he's done well with that. LO still isn't rolling over yet, 3 months old but 1 month adjusted since he was a preemie. So I think I still have a little while until I have to fully remove the swaddle.
  • My daughter hated being swaddled after about 2 weeks.  We used the halo sleepsack with the swaddle at first then took both arms out but kept it tight around her belly and she actually slept better once we let her keep her arms out.  Now she just transitioned to the next size up sleep sack with no swaddle and she did great!  She must have been one of the few babies that didn't prefer the swaddle.
  • Baby boy was wiggling his arms out of a swaddle when he was still in the hospital! He is 12 weeks now, and sleeps good most nights. I stopped swaddling around 3 weeks. He can roll to his side, and moves all over while asleep. One night I got up to check on him, and he had turned a complete 180! His head was at the foot of the crib! Still needs pacifier most of the time. Just ordered a wubbanub so hopefully that'll help him fall asleep faster without pacifier falling out every 5 minutes
  • So we finally took both arms out of swaddle on a whim and she slept GREAT! We've been swaddle free for a couple days - I just love seeing her sleep with her arms above her head. She looks so comfortable! I'm very happy we decided to be done with the swaddle - it will be a good thing in the long run. She is learning to self soothe.
