Baby still waking up a lot at night :/

I know  I am probably in the same boat as others but I am starting to feel I will never have a solid sleep again! I am a STM and my son in now 2 1/2 months an wakes up at night after 4 hrs and then every 2 hours after that. Each wake takes an hour to get him back down :/ My Daughter at this point was almost down the whole night at this point. I know I may be hoping for too much but is there any tricks or ways to help with getting them to sleep longer ?

  • This is exactly how my son is. I would love to see what people have to say.

My son was like this and started to switch his schedule on his own about 2 weeks ago. He is 13 weeks now. I started putting him down for bed in his crib at 7 after a feed. Then I go in at 10 and do a dream feed to get him through to a later in the morning time (don't change their diaper, just plop them back in the crib!). He now wakes up sometime between 3-4. Then he goes back down until 7ish. I have read that they get closer to sleeping through the night as they hit 12 pounds, which I'm sure my LO has hit in the last couple weeks. As my friend said the first 3 months is the 4th trimester and you just have to get through it and the sleep will get better! Good luck ladies!

ETA: it now takes less than half an hour to feed, change, and get him back in bed at the motn feed.
  • Mine was doing 5 hours and then waking up every 2 hours.  It also takes an hour to get him back down.  This past week he went back to every 2 hours for the entire night.  I feel like we're back in the newborn stage.  He's 10 weeks and close to 12lbs.  I'm not sure what's going on with him, but I hope it doesn't last too much longer
  • My little guy went from sleeping through the night to getting up every couple hours and wanting to eat. We started giving him a little rice cereal on a spoon. He did so well with it and is back to only waking up once. He goes down at 8, up around 3:30 or so for a bottle then not up again until almost 7.
  • EBF and baby changes his tune every couple weeks. He's 3 months now and I will say that at least I can count on his wake times in the night being much quicker than they were (changed right around the two month mark) as he eats for 15-20 and is right back down. He very rarely poops in the night as well so I don't change him unless it's a poop (changes wake him right up).

We have had weeks where he does 4, 3, 3; weeks where it's 2 all night long, weeks where he takes hours to get down, and very few days where he does 6 hours to start a few days in a row...all of these have happened since 2 months. I've tried a lot of things to get him to sleep longer short of extra food because I know I have an over supply so he's definitely getting what he needs. He's also over double his birth weight at over 14 lbs so the 12 lb rule didn't work for us unfortunately. I just think every baby does things their own way!

I know it sucks to still be up so much at this point, especially when you see all the posts of babies STTN! I find when I stop fighting it and I expect night wakings, I can deal with them much better and I'm not so stressed out! I've also seen lots of posts from STMs where their first slept amazing and now their second isn't, or vice versa, so it's not necessarily anything you're doing right/wrong. I mean, he'll STTN sometime in the next 5 years for sure, right!? At least you know you're not alone!!
  • So it sounds like I not alone. I am hoping that this will pass soon :/

The 3rd wonder week starts around 11.5 to 12.5 weeks (based on due date) and only lasts about a week. It's possible these challenges will be short lived...!
  • It depends so much on the baby too, some are just better sleepers than others. Don't blame yourself.

  • Just want to say I feel you. My situation exactly. And now he is being crazy like newborn and going through a big mental leap. Up 5 times between 9-1! DD was definitely sleeping at this point. Just trying to ride it out. He rolled over back to belly today and has picked up a couple of new skills so I'm hoping it's over in a few days. Crazy sleep started Thursday night last week. We will make it!
