Vitamin drops

Do you give your baby vitamin D and/or vitamin K drops?

Just curious. I live in the Netherlands, and it's something they really push. The midwives, doctors, nurses, and the informational booklets all make it sound like a must. But I'd never heard of this prior to living here.

We're giving baby his drops, but it's pretty darn tricky to get him to take them. The dispenser is not made to go straight into their mouths. Instead you dribble the drops onto a spoon, but good luck keeping baby from getting them all over his face!

Anyway. Not sure if it's a cultural/philosophical difference or what.

Re: Vitamin drops

  • I am giving our LO 1mL of Vitamin D drops daily. But it comes with a syringe to give it to her. It works really well. I got mine from the behind pharmacy counter. There was another kind on the shelves but this was the Enfamil brand. It takes like sour candy. She doesn't hate it thankfully!

My pediatrician recommend vitamin D for DD1, but only when we asked about it. He said he recommends a D supplement for babies/children (and adults) because people in our region (Pacific NW) are so chronically low. Never personally heard of anyone doing vitamin k.

We have tiny dissolvable D tablets. We didn't start them until maybe 9ish months with DD1, but they'd be ok for babies this ago, too.

Hmm, interesting! The Netherlands, much like the Pacific NW, is sun deprived in general. Maybe that explains the vitamin D obsession. Do you dissolve the tablets in baby's bottle?

A syringe is smart. Why couldn't they do that here? Silly.
  • I was told to give both DD and DS vitamin D if breastfeeding(which I am). Because formula has vitamin D in it and babies don't get much direct sunlight they can become deficient in it when breastfed(that's what the doc told me)
My bottle has a 1ml syringe so my kids always took it just fine.
  • We also did the 1ml syringe, but our little guy hated it - I don't think he ever got more than a tenth of the dose. We switched to the 400IU per drop kind after talking to his ped. ( https://www.amazon.com/Ddrops-Baby-drops-2-5mL-fl-oz/dp/B003CT36NE )

This is the brand we use. We get them from a local health food store. The tablets are so tiny and quick dissolving, I'd be comfortable giving them straight to LO. https://www.amazon.com/Superior-Source-Formula-Nutritional-Supplements/dp/B0052F1R1E/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1460063532&sr=8-1&keywords=Superior+source+d+200#customerReviews

  • I live in Canada and Vitamin D is really stressed here for breastfed babies. The NICU made sure we were giving it to her before she left, and all the health nurses check in to make sure we are continuing to give it to her as well. Apparently it's really important for breastfed babies because they don't get it from our milk like formula fed babies do.
Baby #3 due February. Dx with Spina Bifida Myelo  "good things are coming down the road, just don't stop walking"
  • We give our LO Vitamin D drops it comes with a syringe but we put it in his bottle so we don't have to worry about him spitting it out.
  • I use Carlson's Vitamin D drops which is just vitaminD and coconut oil. I put one drop on my nipple before feeding.

  • Ours takes the enfamil vitamin d as well. We weren't sure how she would like it so we didn't want to put it in her bottle until we knew. Turns out she actually like the cherry flavor and will actually stop fussing and open her mouth for it when she sees the syringe thing
  • I also do the vitamin D drop on my nipple before feedings once a day as directed by my pediatrician. I'm still using the sample he gave us at our appointment so not sure what brand I will end up finding in the store. I'm in the southeast. Only vitamin K I've had was a shot in the hospital after she was born

I'm in Canada as well and it was stressed at every prenatal class and breastfeeding class I took. I ended up formula feeding so I haven't been giving them to her since formula has vitimin D but my understanding is if you're breastfeeding they are a must!
  • I'm not sure which brand I use but I was giving LO the D-Vi-Sol and he spit up every time. I switched to one I got at the health food store and it's one tiny drop that gives him an entire dose without the artificial flavoring. He doesn't even notice when I've given it to him.

*sorry....lurking from March*. Vitamin K is given here as a shot at the hospital  before discharging. Wonder if Netherlands doesn't and thus the recommendation for vitamin K. Vitamin K is very important if there is any chance the baby is deficient. Vitamin D recommendation is quite common in US.

This is exactly what we do. Although I am terrible about remembering - oops. I need to start setting a reminder in my phone.
