breech baby & hip dysplasia

My daughter was breech and the pediatrician has scheduled her for an ultrasound on her hips to check for hip dysplasia. I have learned that this is common to check for with girls who were breech. She goes in for the ultrasound on April 13th and I am a nervous wreck about it. I have Googled the topic and all that did was scare me even more. Has anyone else gone through this? If so, what were the results and if your baby had it what was it like? This is my 5th child, 4th girl but she was my only breech baby. Thanks in advance!

Re: breech baby & hip dysplasia

  • My first son has bilateral hip dysplasia we have no family history and he was not breech ..so he was not screened and diagnosed until he started walking and we noticed a limp it has been very difficult at times yes but it becomes a new a normal and the babies adapt well.
but I have heard many cases where babies that were diagnosed very early and put into a pavlic harness the hip corrects itself much quicker than if it was diagnosed later like my son. If you are on Facebook there are groups  dedicated to DDH I have learned alot from other moms on them that have gone through this as well and are a wonderful support system I highly suggest you join one if your looking for more advice.

  • My daughter who is now 3 1/2 was diagnosed at 4 days old. They heard clicking in her hips when the examined her after birth. She wasn't breech that I know of, but she had hip dysplasia nonetheless. She had to wear a Pavlik harness for approx. 4 months. Part of that was full time and part was just at night. It wasn't easy, but she's had no issues since she stopped wearing it 3 years ago. We go for yearly X-rays to check on her hip development. This next baby will get an ultrasound at 4 weeks because it is more likely to happen in siblings.

  • My DD has an appt the 18th for this. She was breech as well, so I'm hoping her hips are fine. They didn't hear any clicking and her movement seems fine, but we'll see, I guess!

  • Hi! I'm lurking, but wanted to let you know we went through this with my DD who is currently 2 years old now. She was frank breech and had an ultrasound while we were still in the hospital. Her hips were so bad they had us meet with a specialist the day after we came home from the hospital and they fit her for a Pavlic harness. She had to wear it for a total of 10 weeks. First 6 weeks she wore it 24/7 and then only at night for the last 4 weeks. Now her hips are perfect. I was a wreck when I found out, even though I knew it was a possibility. Being my first, everything was so new to me and having to learn how to change her with the harness on seemed daunting. But it flew by and I came to really like the harness - that probably sounds weird, but when she was in the harness there was no way she could roll from her back to her stomach while sleeping. So I felt she was safer sleeping while in the harness. I didn't exactly miss it when she was able to do away with it, but it wasn't as big of a deal as I thought it was going to be. I hope everything is ok with your daughter, but know it's not so bad and it'll fly by.
  • My sister's DS2 was sideways the entire pregnancy, and he had some issues with hip dysplasia.  The thought was that he'd need some kind of immobilizer for his hips or PT.  He had trouble crawling, but even without an immobilizer or PT, he was able to walk just fine by 18 months, no worries.  That is a little late, but not too shabby.
  • (*lurker from May to see all of your cute babies!*)
One of my twins was breech and had the screening ultrasound. She was fine.  Did your LO have any clicks when examined in the hospital?  If not, it is probably just to be safe!  Try not to worry about what is likely just a screening ultrasound!  Good Luck to you

  • My DD was breech until 37 weeks so her pediatrician is sending her for an ultrasound too at six weeks then an X-ray at 6 months. He doesn't think she has it, but is checking her just to be safe.
  • Thank you everyone for your replies. Hearing other stories makes me feel better about it even if she ends up having this. @melzseb I hope the ultrasound shows good news for your baby. I will try to remember to update when we have my daughter's results.
  • My baby just got a harness when we left the hospital.  Seems to be just her right hip but going for an ultrasound in 2 weeks.  A couple different pediatricians who did hospital rounds had different opinions on whether she had the problem or not but the specialist was able to see us during our stay and recommended starting it ASAP and hopefully be done with it in 6-8 weeks. I got upset watching him put her in it but she doesn't seem to mind.  Makes clothing choices limited and diaper changes a challenge but we will get used to it.  Also harder to do skin to skin because I'm afraid of her scraping herself on a metal piece or just chafing.  I guess it's better safe than sorry because if we didn't do the harness now and her hip developed badly I'd feel terrible about making that choice.

So far she is content as could be, so hopefully the specialist was right when he said it's the parents who mind it, not the babies.  He also said its one of the best problems to have in the scheme of things. Most likely her hips will turn  out 100% normal very soon, and it's at an age where no one can tease her for a brace!

Leaving the hospital and passing by the NICU really made me feel lucky that this is her only health issue at birth.
  • I had hip dysplasia when I was born. I wore a brace for the first year of my life and had to be carried everywhere. I'm not going to lie...I was a tough baby for my parents, but I am a totally healthy and normal 35 year old who played soccer and softball, (quite successfully I might add!) and took dance for most of my childhood and teenage years. The dysplasia didn't have any permanent effects! The only thing I wasn't good at was gymnastics - splits are not an option! :)
