Hips don't lie

Looking for ways that others have alleviated their hip pain. Mine continues to surface at night while I'm sleeping and sometimes lasts until mid day. And before you suggest pillows, I've got them all. I'm more so looking for exercises or stretches that you have used that seem to help.

  • I wear a Belly Bandit, and that seems to help somewhat. I think it lifts everything up and alleviates a bit of pressure.  I get this sharp pain in my piriformus (butt muscle). There are some stretches--putting left ankle on right knee and leaning forward helps (and vice versa). I also lie on my side and cross my bottom ankle over the top ankle and try to kind of "lift" my hip up. I feel a good stretch. And epsom salt baths.

  • Pigeon pose from prenatal yoga (with a bolster under my bum)...really not graceful, but does stretch the area well. Also, if you can, get checked by a chiro. My pelvis was misaligned, and that created a massive amount of pain. After a few treatments, it's much better.
  • I posted this in another thread, but I love using my foam roller to stretch my IT band (connects from your hip to your knee). I use it daily, and it has greatly reduced my hip pain at night. Additionally, we have a tempurpedic base for our bed, and I started sleeping with it on an incline. I think it takes pressure off my lower half. You could try stacking pillows so that you're on an incline as well.

This. Also, I got a massage that focused on my hips and thighs - was heaven, lasted me weeks of pain-free sleeping/sitting. Highly recommend, I am going back next week for my birthday. :)

  • Oh and yes, massage! I was supposed to have one yesterday and had to postpone to next week because of the stomach flu I got...so disappointed (but somehow my hip/lower back pain was less when I was sick...maybe my body knows there's only so much a girl can take at once).
  • Like the PP's Pigeon pose is a life saver, using a foam roller on the back/legs and but really helps too, you can get one at Walmart cheap. I've found you just need to be diligent about doing these stretched everyday for the pain to go away but they really do work.

I saw a chiropractor who specializes in prenatal and 3 visits with her really helped my hips and low back. Most insurance cover a decent amount so it's worth checking.
  • I stretch my legs pretty extensively before bed.  The stretch that really targets my hips is the one where you sit on the floor, put the soles of your feet together, and lean forward, trying to keep your knees down as much as possible.   Doing this stretch longer the past couple of nights has helped the most.  I didn't cramp as often as i have been.  Also - I second the foam roller. If you haven't before, it's tough (meaning painful) at first, but it really helps over time, and you can roll your butt and hips too.  If you've never done it - here's a video. you can buy a foam roller at any place that sells sports or yoga stuff.
