Almost 2 month old constipated

I have literally tried everything. I've stimulated him with a thermometer, used Vaseline on my finger and rubbed his butthole, I've tried different formulas, tummy time, I've rubbed his belly, I've done bicycle kicks. I've tried Gripe Water to relieve gas. I've given him apple juice and prune juice and increased his water intake.I don't know how to help my baby poop. His pediatrician says that it's normal for a baby to go up to 5 days without a bowel movement. A week and a half ago when this same thing happened I had to give him a baby enema to get him to poop. He screamed the entire time he was passing it and it was as hard as a rock. I'm not exaggerating. I cried the whole time he was pooping because he was in so much pain.

I know the doctors and the Internet say it's normal for a baby to go so long, but I'm wondering if it's normal for my child. I'm not expecting him to go every day, but he shouldn't be in so much pain. He cries and is fussy and isn't sleeping well. He's normally such a happy baby when he poops.

I just feel helpless.

My oldest was on soy formula and was always constipated and his Dr told me to give him milk of magnesia, ask your Dr about it. My 7 week old however has the opposite problem, she has loose poops multiple times per day. She used to be getting baby oatmeal in her bottles due to reflux and dysphagia, but now she gets a natural thickener in her bottles. Maybe try some oatmeal, but again check with your Dr. Hopefully he doesn't have a bowel obstruction.

That's awful that he has rock hard poop. Talk to your pedi about suppositories - I heard those work. And ask for a referral to a specialist. This doesn't sound normal at all.

It's normal to an extent. Yes babies can take several days to poop but if it's rock hard and painful to poop it's definitely not normal. I'd take him back to the ped or get a 2nd opinion.

Definitely talk to your pedi, when my sister was a baby she had a small cut/tear around her anus which made it painful to poop so she held it in for weeks at a time. Then even after the cut healed she was used to holding it in and refused to poop to the point where her bowel expanded to 2x it's normal size over time. She ended up needing suppositories every night for almost a year in order to regulate her movements and shrink her bowel back to its normal size over time. It was absolutely miserable - of course it's very rare for it to get that far but due to that experience I'm always so wary of letting constipation get too bad before seeking help.

I agree - back to the dr. My niece went 5 days once or twice, but hers were never rock hard. It doesn't sound normal any longer.

Constipation in babies is not about how often they poop but how hard the poop is. Even five days with no poop is normal but rock hard is definitely not normal. Call your pediatrician back, stress that baby's bowel movements are hard and cause pain and distress, see what they recommend. If they don't recommend anything, switch pediatricians. Seriously.
