Newborn with jaundice

I had an awesome birth experience with my son on Saturday. We were home and tucked into our beds 6 hours after he was born.  The last 3 days have been very special but now we are sitting at the children's hospital waiting to be admitted.  He has jaundice bad enough to need to be treated with phototherapy.  I know a 24-48 hour hospital stay isn't the end of the world but man this sucks.  Also, since my parents had my 2 year old last night this makes it the longest time I have been away from him.  I feel bad and miss him too.

Re: Newborn with jaundice

  • Awe I'm sorry you're missing time with your babe. I know @Knottie9983816 little guy had jaundice but things are so much better now after the hospital stay!

  • Aww. I was born jaundiced too and the "solution" used to be to put the baby out on the porch for an hour, a couple times a day (wtf?). Modern medicine is much better!
  • @allisshiney :virtual hugs: Sorry that you're missing LO. I was discharged from hospital three days ago but have been at the hospital every day for billirubin monitoring. LO has jaundice too but not high enough to be admitted...yet. Pedi doesn't seem too concerned because apparently Asian babies have higher bilirubin levels and LO is half Asian. So now we have to check once more before determining if he needs light therapy. The waiting game sucks.

  • Are you bottle feeding or breastfeeding just out of curiosity? Myself and my five younger siblings all had jaundice, so I knew what to expect. It was hard on my fiancé though... As long as your LO is under the lights he is healing. When you take him home try to keep him in sunlight THROUGH A WINDOW as often as possible.

We were in the high risk catagory for 24 hours, and I had to feed him pumped milk in a bottle. (Which freaked me out due to nipple confusion, but THAT wasn't an issue with him) Inalso had a horrid case of baby blues when they first took him back to the nicu. I got a shower and started rubbing my stomach like I did when I was pregnant and had a complete melt down because I just wanted to hold my baby. The nurse heard me sobbing from the desk and came to check on me. She also brought me a kit kat bar later. The only good thing about it was that I could actually sleep without freaking out the whole time he was "baking."

UVA rays... They still tell you to keep them in sunlight now, but through a window, not fully exposed.
  • @Knottie9983816  it's so hard not to hold him. He keeps fussing and his mask keeps sliding down his face.  Then I have to get up and adjust it.  I'm still healing from delivery and the up/down constantly is killing me.

I can imagine... Are you having to stay there with him, or can you go back to your room?

We are at the children's hospital.  I have a midwife so I was home shortly after birth. We are waiting results but I expect to be home shortly then back in the morning to confirm everything is going well.
  • my LO just got put under photo lights too after bili test at 3 this morning.  I know it's good to catch this early but I'm still so upset about it.  I just want to hold my baby : (
