Outgrowing pack n play bassinet

DD is right around the weight limit for the pack n play bassinet. Now what?
My plan was to transition her to her crib in the nursery but some days she still whimpers at night when she wants her pacifier. I'm not about to get up in the middle night and walk over to pop it in only to have to do it again a few minutes later. I suppose I could use the bottom part of the pack n play but I'd still have to get out of bed to reach that low for her pacifier plus I'm already having some back pain from picking my little chunker up all day. Our bed isn't big enough for bed-sharing and I'd probably be too chicken anyway.

What are you all doing or planning to do?

Re: Outgrowing pack n play bassinet

  • We use the pack n play too much with DS still to put it back in the bedroom. I didn't see a regular bassinet lasting as long as I wanted eit her so I moved her crib into our bedroom. It's now along side my side of the bed with maybe two feet of space in between. I can sit on the bed and lean over to pick her up or if I want to change her diaper in the crib I can sit and do that too. This setup should be able to last us a good while.

  • DS is a big boy and outgrew the pack n play bassinet weight limit of 15 lbs at 10 weeks.  My friend loaned us a cosleeper which we loved and has a higher weight limit.  Next time I will start out with a cosleeper. If you don't want to purchase another item you could sidecar your crib if it has a toddler rail.  We ended up moving DS into his room at about 12 weeks because he was waking me up grunting in his sleep and I was waking him up turning in my sleep.
  • I second the co sleeper. DD outgrew her bassinet at around 10 weeks. My MILs pack n play has an adjustable mattress height so maybe yours does too?
  • Yes DD outgrew her halo bassinet at about 10 weeks. She is in her crib now (13 weeks) but it is a nightly struggle. I keep telling myself that if I just suck it up and get her used to the crib now I won't have the transition later from co-sleeping. She usually sleeps 8 pm -1/2 am-ish in her crib and then after that it is a hit or miss whether I can get her back to sleep in the crib. Usually she ends up sleeping with us until 5/6 am when we get up. I have not figured out the pacifier issue you brought up as DD loses it 5 seconds after I leave her room. I made the mistake of having her asleep when putting her in the crib so she is not good at waking up and self soothing back to sleep. Not sure my next plan of attack....

  • DD outgrew her bassinet at 6 weeks!  We started with swaddled in the crib, moved to a Halo sack and the crib around 10 weeks (I don't remember exactly, but it was awhile ago!)  That's where she is now and she sleeps 7-10 hours, depending on the night.  Our bed is only 4 feet from the crib, so I wonder if having us nearby is what has made her so secure about sleeping that exposed...

  • DD is still under the 20lb weight limit for her uppababy bassinet, but she's been wanting to move around while sleeping so we just went through her second night in the pack n play.
She has woken herself up at 3AM both nights. O_o
Thankfully that's been the only problem. We will probably put together the crib and keep it in our room.

  • I realize your bed is too small but I'm just hoping to be helpful by saying Olive bed shares now. She still fits in her bassinet but flat out refuses to sleep in it, or the crib. So we bought on of those mesh sided cots that go in the bed with you. She sleeps like an angel in that. I'm scared, not of crusing her or suffocating her, but of the mattress itself. I subscribe to the SIDS-might-be-caused-by-chemically-treated-mattress-toxicity thoeory as it is sound research and makes a lot of sense. Olive's bassinet always had an organic pad in it. But our mattress isn't organic. So that concerns me. But she just won't sleep in any other bed. So we have made it as safe as we can.

I love bedsharing. I have to admit. I love being so near her. I love watching her sleep. She's so fuzzy and cute when she sleeps, I had no idea! She reaches for my hand a lot in the night which is incredible. I love her being close to me.

I'm not sure what the longer term solution is but i'm thinking a pack and play.
