Magic sleep suit?

Have any of you Stm used the Merlin magic sleep suit? You're suppose to start it around 3 months to transition from swaddle. It worked wonders for my son when I started using it. he waked every 2hrs until I discovered it when he was 5 months old. Anyways my DD is only 8wks and I really wish I could try it out now. Have any of you mommies started using it right at 3 months with a previous baby and seen an improvement in their sleep? I'm just hoping it works great for her too and can't wait to try it out lol.

Re: Magic sleep suit?

  • I'm interested in this too. DD is 11 weeks now and won't sleep long if not swaddled, but she hates being swaddled and ends up waking up loudly fighting against it. I would love to begin trasitioning her out of it but her startle reflex is still an issue.

  • Sooooo had to Google this.  I laughed so hard I peed myself.  Those babies look like their in State Puff Marshmallow Man suits!!

Also, the phrase, "What sorcery is this?" sprung into my head when I read the original post.

going ng to do research on this, though.  My kiddos have all done well with Halo wraps but I like that this has no loose fabric to it.  Does it make them super warm, though?  Too warm = too deep sleep = increased SIDS risk.

This is basically Olive exactly. She doesn't loudly fight against it. She doesn't do anything loudly thank god.. But she stands stonily against it. I've looked in her bassinet hours after she's gone to bed and stayed silent only to find her staring at me, swaddle in a disorganized puff around her freed limbs. And then she'll smile at me. Just this closed mouth, eerie smile. And then fall asleep.

We transitioned to the halo a few days ago. She doesn't seem to mind it but is resentful of the velcro which is harder to Houdini her way out of than muslin is. So I've started swaddling her arms out.

Basically, this routine isn't going to last forever. So  I looked into this Merlin thing for my little Houdini. It looks hot though.. aren't we supposed to keep them on the cool side?
  • @groovylocks DD was breaking out of every Swaddle, including the Halo, until I got the Ollie Swaddle and now she's locked down. But she's getting increasingly unhappy in it.

Do you have issues with her startling awake with the arms out Swaddle? I may have to give it a try. DD was almost too distracted trying get free to eat last night.

  • I thought it looked ridiculous when I found it for my son but I was desperate for sleep and it worked like magic lol... I put him in just a onesie or light sleeper and he seemed fine. In the summer we run the air conditioning so he was ok in a short sleeve onesie in it. It's pretty open so I think air flows thru it. I can't wait to use it on my daughter. Also everyone who babysat him laughed their butts off when they saw him in it but I didn't care he went from every 2hr wakeings to sleeping 5 or more hours.
  • When your baby is ready to start transitioning out of the swaddle, but still has a strong startle reflex you might want to try the Zipadee-Zip. I wish I had it for my first one. I've heard great things about it and was planning on using it for baby #2 but he was totally cool with arms out of the swaddle by 3 weeks.

  • We used the sleep suit for DD and loved it. She was able to break out of the swaddle but still loved being swaddled. It didn't overheat her, we just used Cotten pjs instead of fleece.

Not really issues with startling. She was getting her arms free of the muslin swaddles before we switched to a swaddle sack. So she's gotten used to sleeping with them out. Plus she's more or less started finding control over her little hands and at night, sucks her fingers and thumb. Weird, because she never showed much interest in her bepi (pacifier).
  • We have used the Magic Sleepsuit for all of our babies and have loved it.  We found it on a review by fitfoodiemom and are so thankful we did!  We have used both the Microfleece and the Cotton and have never had issues with our LO's being too warm, we keep our house at 69 and put a light cotton pj on underneath.  The open hands and feet allow their heat to escape, unlike being wrapped in a swaddle or sleepsck, and the cotton inside keeps them feeling cool.  For our first this was a sanity saver, we went from up every two hours to getting 7 hour stretches.  Make sure it fits right, we started a little too soon with baby number 2 and it took longer for the Magic to work since it was a tad too big.  I highly recommend it and give it to all my mom friends as a shower gift!
  • @Holdmomma put an order in for the zipadeezip. I got one on sale and since it's not too expensive it's worth a shot!

  • We are currently using it and it is working well. My son looks hilarious, but seems cozy and is sleeping as well as, if not a little better, than he did in his swaddle sacks or muslin swaddle blanket.

For those that have it, how do you nurse in them? Seems uncomfortable to nurse a baby in one(although probably hilarious looking).

ETA - what if they need a diaper change in the MOTN after nursing??
  • @calbin00 it isn't that hard to nurse- a bit unwieldy, but the suit is soft. I typically do the cradle hold. Also, the two zippers make diaper changes much easier than I was expecting. He hates even a slightly damp diaper, so he gets changed every feed. Just unzip both zippers, pull each leg out, and change. Then, pop each leg back in and rezip. I don't take his arms out or anything, so he is still mostly (arms and torso) in the suit.
  • I'm wondering if anyone else has since tried this?

Following. After ANOTHER sleepless night of waking up EVERY.SINGLE. HOUR. I ordered the zipadeedo. I want to buy this also but LO is over 18 lbs now in 12 month clothes. The suit says 6-9 is the largest size. Anyone else with a very large baby know about the fit?

This is what I was wondering as well as Ellie is 16lbs. I woke up every hour too :/
  • Ours is coming in the mail today and I'll report back my findings. Zipadeezip was a fail for us because DD can still flail enough to keep herself awake. Here's hoping the sleep suit works because DD is beginning to fight the Swaddle and looking like she wants to roll.

  • I just ordered this and will report back. DD only will nap long stretches on me or swing. She's still waking up every 2-3 hours also after a recent regression. I'm desperate. I've tried the Zippity but didn't like it as when LO lifted her arms over her head the fabric would be pulled up and bunch over her face - not cool
  • First night in the Merlin's Magic Sleep Suit was not quite magic, but definitely promising!

A little background: DD had only ever slept in her Ollie Swaddle, but I wanted to proactive about getting her transitioned out before she starts to roll and before she's moved to her crib - she currently sleeps in the Halo Bassinest next to my bed. She also spends a lot of time grunting and fighting against the Swaddle in her sleep so I thought she might be ready. She's had sleep stretches as long as 7 hours (rare!), and nights where she wakes every hour, but generally sleeps in 3-5 hour stretches with about 2 wakings to eat.

The suit itself (we have the cotton one) is much softer and cozy than I thought it would be, and seems fairly light. DD seemed to fit well in the 3-6 month with some room to grow and she is about 14 1/2 lbs. I am a little concerned about her getting hot so instead of her footer sleeper I put her in a leg less onesie and socks.

The first thing I noticed is she fell RIGHT asleep in this thing. She required almost no rocking. Once down I watched her. She still has a very strong startle reflex which is why the zipadeezip failed - she would startle and stay awake. In the Merlin I watched her startle maybe 8 times in a row and settle immediately! With that said she did end up waking every hour for the first three hours. But when I would take her out to rock her it took a fraction of the time for her to fall back asleep. She looks to cozy in it! After that she slept 4 hours, woke to eat and is currently in hour 2 of her last sleep. I think this is pretty good for making a sudden transition.

If you're worried about sizing perhaps it would be a good idea to order both sizes and return the one that doesn't fit? I also think the website says you can call for sizing help. It is pretty pricy, but worth it to me for some sleep. I think the zipadeezip could be s good transition out of the Merlin one day, so I'm saving mine for that.

  • Update: night 2 in the suit started great - 1.5 hours sleep, followed by 3.5 hours sleep - then went horribly wrong. She woke up at 2:00 am and would not go down until 4:00 am. I have to be up for work at 5:30 am so I am tired. She does usually wake up here and there, but this is the first time she was up for more than a half hour. I ended up ripping the suit off and swaddling her. Maybe it wasn't the suit's fault, but that was awful.

    Aw no! Sorry :(
  • We have been using it since 3mo and like it! It's not magic by any means, but dulls her startle reflex a bit and she was breaking out of swaddle. It's soft and comfy. Her naps improved a lot but I think bc she doesn't spend as much time trying to squirm her arms out
  • I used this for a week when I stopped swaddling my son with his arms in. It didn't improve his sleep but I think it helped transition him from full swaddle to arms out since it dulls the startle reflex. For the price, I wish I would have got more use out of it but maybe with my next baby I'll use it earlier.
  • I want this to be magic!  I just ordered one.  Naps are so bad right now.... She wakes up after 20-30 minutes and fights the swaddles so hard.  I end up just letting her nap in my arms which is getting really old at this point.  She needs to learn how to soothe herself to sleep... Fingers crossed the suit can help.  I also bought a crib soother - I'm ready to try anything!
  • We've been using ours for about a week now. It's not magic, but I do think it's helped transition from swaddle/bassinet to sleeping in her crib. She still has a strong startle reflex so it def helps with that and I think she feels secure. Most she's slept is still 4 hours.
