Crib cover v. pad?

Working on finalizing my registry and there's one thing I can't seem to figure out. What's the difference between a crib waterproof mattress cover and a waterproof mattress pad? Why would you choose one or the other? Any recommendations for a particular brand? Is this something that's necessary?

Re: Crib cover v. pad?

  • I'm guessing the difference is the cover fits like a fitted sheet whereas the pad lays on the mattress below the fitted sheet. Then again, it could be the same thing being called something different.

I'd also recommend sheet protectors. They're smaller pads that tie onto the crib and sit on top of the sheet. We didn't get these until after DS was born because that's when we found out he liked to drool and spit up a bit when laying down. These are also good to protect sheets from major blowouts.

  • We use both.  It's mattress, waterproof mattress protector, mattress pad then the fitted sheet on top.  We never used or needed the sheet protectors on top with DD, but maybe we will with this one.
