Letrozole vs Clomid

I'm curious what explanations everyone's doctors have given them regarding choosing letrozole over clomid (or vice versa). My doctor said she doesn't use clomid at all anymore because letrozole doesn't thin your lining, doesn't have as bad side effects, and doesn't produce as many multiples as clomid - all while maintaining the same pregnancy success rate. My general research turned up the same comparison - so I'm curious to hear from some ladies on clomid what their doctors reasoning was for choosing that over letrozole.

Re: Letrozole vs Clomid

  • My doctor is switching me, but the nurse didn't say why, so I am curious as well.

  • I have PCOS and my RE as well as my best friend who is an OBGYN suggest Clomid and I just got prescribed it for my next cycle. I was never told about alternatives, and they do ultrasounds to make sure it is not thinning my lining. If it is my RE said she will switch me to something else but feels Clomid is my best chance.

I am interested to see what other people have been recommended.

  • @sarahmsoda - PCOS here too!

  • I have a LP problem. My RE thought that if I produced more than 1 egg it could help that so she put me on Clomid because I'm more likely to produce 2-3 eggs this way.
  • My OB/GYN put me on Femara because she said she's had better success with that in patients with PCOS and because it doesn't thin your lining as much as Clomid. Several years ago when I took Clomid 50 mg I didn't respond well at all. This month taking Femara, my lining was just barely in the good range the day I had my trigger shot with the single follicle, so clomid definitely is not for me, she said. If another cycle of Femara doesn't work with TI, we'll try one or two with an IUI, and then move on to injectibles.

I was on 50 mg of Clomid for two cycles. Two follicles the first round, and only one the second. They switched me to Femara this month because it doesn't thin your lining like Clomid does. My lining was still only 5.4 on day 14, so I would guess they'll have me use estrace next cycle.
