How do you relieve back pain?

I'm 18.5 weeks & having the worst back pain. It's not constant, but when it comes it's awful. I have a Snoogle, which helps when I sleep, but besides prenatal massage I'm not sure what I can do to help. I've read that using a heating pad can be hazardous to the baby, so that doesn't seem like a good option. Do any BTDT moms have any suggestions?

  • I have never tried one (yet), but a pregnancy belt may help. I've had more pelvic pain this pregnancy and my OB recommended one for that. They are also suppose to help with back pain.

  • Stretching and yoga help! As well as rest, of course. Sometimes back pain is unavoidable. I've had it every day since before my BFP  :/ But mine gets worse when I walk a bit so I make sure to sit down when it hurts too much. Also, try, as much as you can, to watch your posture. A pregnant belly messes up your posture and does a number on your back, this is where a support belt could help. Going in the pool could help too! I've tried many things and I can't avoid it, just make it better for a while.

  • 17 weeks 5 days here and lots of back and sciatica pain.
I've been doing 40 minutes of prenatal palates 5 days a week.
And seeing our chiropractor every two weeks.

Between the both I feel a huge difference. Much less pain.

Lizbeth Garcia made a really fun to follow prenatal palates video to follow along with.
each section is 10 minutes. And you can choose to do one section or all of you feel up to it.
I purchased it off of AMAZON for $5.00 prime.

I also feel feel like the stretching and stregnthening will also help during birth.

Another thing, sleeping with a large pillow on between my legs helps aching during the night.
  • Regular prenatal yoga was a huge help for me during my first pregnancy.

  • I am buying the generic Thermacare wraps in bulk, either CVS or Walgreens. They last for 8-10 hours and help me so much. I use one on my neck and lower back mostly to sleep, and also for work sometimes. When I am at home I use ice packs as well, but the Thermacare are great for on the go, you can't see them under clothing unless its super tight.

I do reformer pilates as well - any kind of pilates or yoga should help you stretch and work out soreness.

  • im sure some Cat/Cow yoga poses wouldnt hurt. felt so good to me pre-pregnancy, im gonna have to start them up again. Yoga is awesome! i loved it P.P. but fell off wagon because my yoga teachers studio was taken from her from the person she was renting it from. i am thinking i definitely need to get back to it. pinterest has some good articles on safe pregnancy poses. Good luck!!
  • Certain stretches, Barre, and prenatal yoga has helped mine so much.
I do use a heating pad at night but on a lower setting and only short periods of time. I used on with my son as well.

  • My doctor recommended those little bean filled things you can microwave- you can control the heat. She also said a heat pad is fine if you can keep it on a low heat.

@RedMar, thanks. I didn't even know what sciatica was, so I skipped right over that one!

    Thanks for the tips everyone!
