Flu and pregnancy

Well, my husband and daughter have tested positive for flu. I did not get my flu shot, though my dr and I talked about it multiple times somehow I always left without it. Tuesday my husband went to dr to see if he was positive for flu, he was and I went to OB and got the vaccine. They also put me on Tamaflu. Today, my daughter went to dr and tested positive too.

Im current taking the tamaflu and feeling achey, fevery and flat out drained.
I made DH go buy a thermometer and if I have fever I'll be calling my OB for a plan.

Anyone else ever had the flu while pregnant? We had a loss in August at 11w that was hard, I can't imagine losing a baby due to the flu. Any advice or words will help at this point! I'm really starting to panic.

Re: Flu and pregnancy

  • My DH also has the flu. He's been out of work most of the week with it and I'm worried about getting it as well. My doctor told me to come in immediately if I start showing symptoms so she could treat me. Otherwise she said to drink plenty of fluids and to keep the fever below 100. From what I've been told the flu can't hurt the baby but a fever can. So just stay on top of that. I'm sure your OB will have good advice.

  • So sorry to have the added stress on top of feeling crummy! As @JournoGrl23 pointed out, stay on top of the fever, as that's the most dangerous part to baby. And stay hydrated! I hope you feel better soon! Hugs.

    Just keep swimming.
  • The doctor gave me a flu shot, i wasn't going to get one, within a week of getting it i had the flu. When i called the office they said just drink as much as possible doesnt matter if its, tea, soda, water or gatorade. Just stay hydrated.
  • My dh, dd, and ds all have had the flu within the last couple of weeks. I have been trying so hard to hand wash all the time, keep things clean, and basically not get too close to them. Well, my throat has been a little scratchy the past couple of days and since I woke up this morning, I have been feeling like I am swallowing shards of glass! I really hope I don't get full blown influenza. We all had our flu shots so the flu for them has not been as bad as it could be but still.
  • I had the flu about a month ago....I actually passed out at the airport on route to a meeting for work. I ended up in the ER and then stayed in hospital for 4 days after....It was all b/c of the flu! Crazy what your body can do to you. I then was put on bed rest for a few days and worked from home the following week b/c i was to weak to do much. I also had a loss/molar pregnancy last year and it was terrifying me that it could happen again. Doctors in hospital kept reminding me that I have the flu, the baby does not. That helped put my mind at ease. I was not allowed to be on any meds though (not even tamiflu) so it took a long time to get out of my system but I'm happy to say that My baby boy is 22 weeks today and growing perfectly :-) I still have a slight cough all these weeks later but it was a rough month. Hope you feel better fast!
  • Thank y'all for all the stories and encouragement! It honestly does help to hear others talk about it. I'm feeling ok today, I was already on tamaflu when I started feeling yucky. I think that has helped. So glad to hear some of you getting flu but baby being ok. That helps put me at ease a lot!
  • I had the flu last month. It's was scary and my temp would not go down with Tylenol. I had to be on I V fluids to keep the temp down. I felt really bad for about 10 days then just bad for another week or so. I did recover and the baby is just fine!  Hang in there.
