What to do for nausea?

edited April 2016 in November 2016 Moms
Hey y'all, I've finally been approved as a new member and I'll introduce myself next but first I *NEED* to ask what do y'all do for nausea? My son was probably literally 80% zofran but the FDA has disapproved that for use during pregnancy so I don't know what to do. I don't actually throw up, at least I haven't yet this time around, but the nausea is crippling. Any homeopathic suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Re: What to do for nausea?

  • The usual. Ginger, small & frequent meals, seabands, crackers...

Or or ask for a prescription for Diclegis (or just buy Unisom & B6).

  • Hey, welcome! I wore sea bands for a week during the really bad nausea, and I think they helped a little. I got tired of wearing long sleeves to hide them, though. Honestly, the best thing for me is to eat about every 2 hours, even when I don't want to. I've been dealing with nausea for a solid 4 weeks now.

  • Spearmint gum for the last couple days has helped me. Before that I was sucking on lemon drops. In previous pregnancies I just had to make sure I ate frequently.
  • I'm doing the unisom and B6 combo and it helps a lot.

Other than that, hard candies, snacking, and sleeping like a bear during winter.
  • Hard candies, small meals with protein, and unisom and B6 help me a lot. Morning sickness sucks!

  • Ginger. I soak mine in hot water for "tea."  Hard candies. Saltines or toast.

  • I also use Ginger like many pp's.  I snack on gingersnaps and sip on ginger ale when feeling nauseated.  I also eat saltines or bread which helps.

  • Never letting myself have an empty stomach. It gets so much worse if I haven't eaten in a while, I'll just randomly gag, so I just make myself snack and it helps a lot.
  • This is my FFMC.  Last time I was sick all day every day for the first tri.  The only time I got relief for a long stretch was to eat a quarter pounder from McDonalds.  Typically I don't go to fast food places but there was something magical about that burger.

Iced ginger tea, lime, and mint bitters. Sounds a little gross but it's wonderful. You could also replace the tea with ginger ale. (Or do reg bitters instead of mint)
  • My nausea was so bad my doc put me on zofran anyway. It's only a class C so it doesn't worry me too much. I'm past the period of super bad nausea now though so I just drink gingerale and chew spearmint gum with b6 in it. Good luck!

  • Wake up my man and he brings me sorbet I nibble on that until I can get quinoa in me then stay Fed. Keeping my tummy full helps and the sweet cold allows the sorbet in. I got a super healthy one since I have allergies and those strawberry chunks mmmm

I also LOVE ginger tea for headache.
  • I know this sounds super weird, but this little secret has been passed down in my family for years....

Now and Laters. Yes the candy, suck on one and you'll feel better!!!

Not every flavor works for me, apparently baby likes the red and green ones but it works!!!

I second the spearmint gum. It gets me through work most days :)

  • So, I never thought that I would do this (I pass out whenever I have to get a shot), but I tried acupuncture and it has worked great for me. I felt so much better (nausea gone, could eat again!), just the next day.
  • I discovered sweet tarts this AM...quite helpful. They don't SOUND desirable to me, but they helped.

  • A friend suggested Altoids, and its helped a lot today. I was going to try the diclegis, but my husband went to pick up the prescription, the pharmacy won't fill it yet, because it would be $600! I hate our high deductible plan, so I'm hoping I can find some alternatives that can get me through the day.
  • @fiscally3 OTC Unisom & B6...that's all Diclegis is anyways!

  • Unisom and B6
  • ginger ale and trying to keep eating no matter how bad I feel. Though I should eat now and just can't bring myself to do it :(.
  • @comealongponds thanks. How much do you take of each? I'm going to look into it! Just ginger ale is making it tough to chase 3 littles.

  • Hi, My doctor told me change my diet!  I suffered the last 3 weeks with awful morning sickness.  I was on some medication and eating the BRATTS diet and trying to keep food in my system at all times.  None of this was helping and I was not only dropping weight but things were getting worse.

Here's what my doctor told me (I had never heard of this before!):

He said I was doing everything wrong and told me to get rid of all the sugar in my diet.  This included foods that turn into sugars; white russet potatoes, white rice...basically all simple carbs.  He told me to eat complex carbohydrates (sweet potatoes, quinoa, brown rice, beans, lentils and nuts), protein and fruit.  He said to eat every 20 mintues and drink a lot of water.

I felt better that day!  I went from being sick and bedridden to feeling almost like myself.

You wouldn't think beans and nuts would be good for an upset nauseated stomach but it turned me around!
I lost 11 pounds and now i've gained 6 back!  I am now off all of my medication other than B-6(take 50 mg in the morning and 50 at night) and my prenatal which is Vitafusion prenatal gummy that my doc's PA told me is easy on your tummy.

I eat mixed nuts, sweet potato chips with no salt or sugar, a lot of Amy's organic bean soups, and mighty bars that are organic protein jerky bars.

I hope this helps you like it helped me because it completely changed my experience with pregnancy!
*Check with your doctor to make sure this is safe for you.
  • I have been a sucker for all things citrus: hot water with lemon and honey (sometimes with some ginger, sometimes cold like the most delicious lemonade you've ever had), lime popsicles, juice with seltzer water.
