So I have an offer for a new job, which I have accepted, I'm just waiting on my background check to come back before I give my 2 weeks notice at my current job...I know its clear but ya know in case I have an evil twin out there causing trouble or something I'm waiting! Iam very excited as it is a wonderful opportunity... great benefits, better pay, no weekends, and much closer to home (30 min vs. an hour and 15 min)!!! Because of what I do (I work in banking), generally when you give a 2 weeks notice they will just let you go because of security issues and such.. So I could be starting my new job as soon as this week!!! Well while I have accepted the offer there are still some details we have yet to discuss.. like my exact pay! (I know, I know! but that is how desperate I am to get away from where I am! But I know what their base pay is so I really don't care). Also on this list of things to discuss is my pumping situation!!! So I am wondering if any of you have had any similar experiences and how you approached it! I don't want to start out on the wrong foot!
My thought would be to just bring it up when you do some kind of orientation or initial scheduling. It's something that you're guaranteed by law, so you don't really need to worry much! I would just mention it when you're discussing your schedule with them or when they're giving you the rundown of breaks and operations.
You should ask for the job offer in writing (through an email) that lists your pay rate and start date on it. Once you have that in hand I would call your supervisor to ask about work hours/ breaks. That's when you can mention that you'll need probably two additional 15 minute breaks each day in addition to your lunch. I'm salaried and usually get 1 hr for lunch. Instead I get 1/2 hour and two 15 minute breaks (I usually take a little more than 15 minutes to pump). Then you can also ask about a room to pump in. If you're not comfortable talking to your supervisor about it you could always try to ask an HR representative.
Congrats, that's great news! I would also negotiate your salary up front and mention the pumping later. Do they know you have a baby? Is your supervisor a woman?
i started a new job last month. Those of you in the US - obamacare requires by law that companies provide you with a room to pump and you can pump as many times a day as needed for as long as you need. I didn't let my new boss know till my first day and it wasn't an issue.
Re: Job Offer.. when/how to mention pumping?!?
Good luck!!
