Logistics

So DH and I have an event of sorts to attend coming up. It will take about an hour to get there, will be a few hours long, and then another hour home. I'm exclusively breastfeeding and this will be the longest I've been away from the baby. I plan to have bottles prepared for the baby before we go but my question more so pertains to while we are gone. Since we will be gone for at least two to three feedings, how would you deal with this? Would you pump while you're gone or do you think I can avoid it? It's a fancier evening with cocktail attire and I'm afraid I will leak through my dress etc. Also my dress that fits is not really pump/BF friendly :(

Re: Logistics

  • I'm not the expert but thinking about it from my standpoint, I think if it's one time, you shouldn't need to pump. Now you may become a bit engorged but you could excuse yourself to the ladies room and hand express a bit to make yourself comfortable. Make sure you wear breast pads, they can be very discreet if you have a thicker material over them

i think the supply issue really comes from consistently not pumping when they eat, but I'd like to see others' opinions on it as well

  • Like PP said, it's not gonna cause a supply issue from skipping a pump/feeding one time. I would either feed or pump right before I walked out the door & then bring my pump so that I could pump in the car on the way home if you're engorged or uncomfortable.

I'm having this same problem next weekend! Since it is in the evening I'm hoping I can go without pumping and then once I return home either pump or feed. I will however be wearing pads and bringing along a pump that is battery powered and a lunch bag with ice packs just in case so I can use it in the bathroom if needed. Otherwise it can remain in the car for the evening!
  • Lurking from March. When DS1 was 2 months, we flew to NYC for a wedding. I was gone from 2 pm to about 1 am. I was in a pretty fancy gown and pumped right before, and pumped there at least once. From my experience you may get way too uncomfortable if you skip 2-3 feedings and will want to do something to relieve engorgement. Definitely second the breast pads. I forgot to charge my pump and had to have an outlet. Big mistake. I was in a room that wouldn't lock and got walked in on at least 5 times by male employees. Horrific experience.

Skipping feeding just once won't kill your supply, but it may kill your boobs! Ow. Take your pump with you so you can slip away if you need to (you'll probably have to sit in the bathroom with the top of your dress unzipped and pulled all the way down. That's what I had to do with a bridesmaid dress). You may not need it, but you don't want to be stuck without it. If you have a pump that requires a wall plug, try to get a battery pack for it so you have a little more flexibility (I know Medela makes battery packs for their PISA).

  • I went to a concert this past weekend and faced a similar dilemma.  I picked up a manual breast pump at Target before the concert. I pumped in the backseat once I parked car and brought the pump with me. The look on the security guard's face after he asked me what was in the Target bag in my purse was priceless! Fortunately we sat in club suites so had a private bathroom. I periodically pumped there to relieve engorgement but didnt do full blown pump sessions. I was full when I got home but not uncomfortable. I also brought an extra set of breast pads but didnt need them.  I didnt have any supply issues the next day.
  • I would pump in the car on the way there and back. I have a car charger for my Medela. I used it a few times with DD when we were traveling so I could pump her a bottle instead of stopping to feed
  • Personally, I would at least pump on the car ride both ways for comfort and to help replenish the stash of milk used. I have a hand pump and a car adapter for my electric pump, so I've used both (the hand pump is almost always in my car for those "just in case" times I'm out longer than planned and need a quick pump).

Me too. You can bring along a cover if that makes you more comfortable, and you could pull into a parking lot or something to get you dress all adjusted, if you would be worried about running into someone at the event before getting out the car and still having your chest exposed.

  • Thanks ladies! I think I will bring my pump in the car since I have a car charger and pump on the way there and on the way home. So thankful I have you all to pose these questions to! I don't have any friends who are breastfeeding and my mom didn't either so they  aren't able to provide much advice.
