Heart monitors dangerous?

So i am very bad about it. But i use my heart monitor like once a week. But this last week i have used it everyday. I feel bad about it. I did some research online and supposedly the monitor sends waves into the womb that sounds like a helicopter flying over and I'm concerned i will effect my babies hearing. I have also heard it can burn your baby if it is on them to long. I'm not sure how true this is. But has anyone had a successful pregnancy and healthy baby when using a heart doppler all the time like me? I mean i used it with my first son. But i don't think i used it as much as this baby. My son has good hearing but he also is going in for tubes because his ears are bad. I hope i don't make this one worse. I just need some comfort that baby will be alright

Re: Heart monitors dangerous?

  • I do not have a fetal Doppler, but I know a couple friends who do. Their doctor suggested limiting use to once a week maximum. They don't have hard evidence that it can be harmful to baby, but they have some suspicion that repeated daily expose may not be the best. I know a lot of people use them and I'm sure you aren't the only one using it a lot. If I were you, I would try to limit use a little more and talk to your OB specifically about what they think. I know it's hard to not want to check them daily, but soon you will be able to feel kicks and movement so maybe it will be a little easier! Good luck :)

  • Thank you. And i will start limiting my use because I'm feeling little kicks. I just really hope and pray i haven't hurt my baby. And i asked my doctor if they are safe to use. She said yes and my nurse also said yes. I guess it depends on your doctor.
  • I used my Doppler throughout my entire last pregnancy and DS turned out fine.  I used it almost daily, mostly because I never heard that it could even be harmful.  This time around I'm using it less, probably 2-3 times a week and no more than 1-2 minutes at a time.  I'm not worried about it since my dr said they are fine but I try not to go overboard just to be cautious.
  • Thanks. That gives me hope then. I just feel horrible. To be honest there are some days i use it twice. Which i know is very bad. I am a worry wort. And it really sucks. Every small thing that happens i feel like i need to check up on the baby. I'm thinking about selling that darn heart monitor.
  • My doctor told me that it was fine to use it as often as we wanted....

  • I used it daily with my daughter. As soon as i heard her heartbeat i would stop.  Nothing wrong with her!
  • First off - my son also needed tubes and I never used a home fetal doppler on him.. it was an easy pregnancy and we had very few ultrasounds/use of a doppler only at monthly appointments, so I wouldn't worry that the two are connected at all.

I agree with others that maybe cutting down on how often.. partially for the baby and also for yourself? Seems like instead of addressing your worries and why you're so nervous about this pregnancy you're just calming those nerves a couple times a day with a doppler. Take a deep breath, things are going fine... try to find some confidence and see if you can go a day or two without it.

  • My doctor told me they were safe and didn't give me any sort of limitation on how frequently I can use it. I do limit my use to once a week, because if I didn't give myself a limit, I can see how it can turn into an everyday thing. I also read on the internet (not from a doctor) that it may be a little loud for the baby. However, I live in a big city and everyday I am near trains whooshing by me, loud sirens, trucks,  etc... so the baby is being exposed to loud city noises on a daily basis.

Given the fact that doctors restrict us from eating deli meats, unpasteurized dairy, and anything that poses even a small risk to our babies, I doubt so many of them would be giving us the green light on dopplers if there was any real risk. There are a lot of scary things on the internet, and I too was concerned, however I trust my OB and ultimately I listen to whatever she tells me is safe or not safe.

  • Agree with PP on this - I asked my OB about it and she told me that she took one home from her office during her last pregnancy (she gave birth in Feb) and used it on herself to calm her nerves. Her only caution to me was to not let it make me crazy, ie don't freak out if I can't find anything.

She didn't say anything about frequency of use, but my questions were more about if it was worth it, as in, do they work. I just got mine in the mail yesterday (it works), and I'm planning on using it once a week-ish, FWIW.
  • Thanks guys. This made me feel so much better. I just need to chill.
