Was talking to another mom today and asked her how old her daughter was. She replied with "24 months." ........ ........ ....... Two. Your daughter is two. I just can't wrap my head around that. I can't be the only one who is annoyed by that.
Lol yeah. I gave months until DD turned 18 months almost 2 then 2/ 1/2 now almost 3.
I know many Moms who use months up until age 2 though. I get for development reasons months matter and that's fine for you, as the Parent, to know and keep track of but the average person just wants a year, not months.
Little+Tiny I can't tell from your siggy- do you have kids?
I'm not asking to be condescending in any way. I just noticed that I used to feel that way but now that I have kids, I understand why almost all moms talk in months- especially to other moms (to men, you just say "he's a toddler" ). There are relatively big differences between a 24 month-old and a 20 month-old, for example. Most other moms want to know your kids' actual age and if you say 2, that could mean anywhere from 24 to 35 months. Huge difference between 24 and 35 months old.
Having said that, most moms I know (including myself) would say something like this, between 24 months and 3 years: - He just turned 2. - He turned 2 back in February. - He's almost 2.5 - He'll be 3 this summer.

I speak this way. Developmentally, up until the age of two it does matter to a Mom who is counting those months along with her Little. There are so many milestones that occur on a weekly basis. The difference between 14 months and 16 months is huge. It incites a lot of dialogue from a conversational standpoint with fellow Moms, I find.
I won't use months to state age after 2. I find it funny you're annoyed so much by it. The same argument could be said about listing how many weeks pregnant you are.
I see the word siggy all over the place. I'm message board stupid so I have no idea what it is. I've tried to do the little tickers and it just comes up in html.
No I don't have any kids. The whole developmental thing makes sense I guess, now that someone has explained it. I guess it's just a little weird to hear. Especially since I'm not around babies.
Yup, I'm with PPs that it depends on your audience, but I don't mind months up to 2. If a mom asks, I'm more likely to be precise than if a guy or woman who might not have kids asks. My DS is 19 months and is pretty far from how he was a few short months ago, and how he'll be at 2. I would say 2 instead of 24 months since they're equivalent, but probably "just turned 2" or some other modifier to make it more precise.
Like previous posters mentioned, I think that up until 2 years old, you'll find most parents refer to the age of their child in months because developmentally, each month is huge. If I ask a parent how old their kid is, I expect them to answer in months. Up until my kid was maybe 3 months old, I referred to her age in weeks. Idk, I guess once you have your kid you'll understand.
So, I use the monthly system too, but when my daughter was 12 months old I said she was one.
edited to add: when I did this during conversations with other moms I almost always got follow up questions/requests to clarify. It would usually go something like "she's one! Yep, just had her birthday!". I still liked doing it though. Reducing fractions makes me happy.
It was a pet peeve of mine too, until I had a baby. Now, whenever I talk to other moms I always use months and most likely will until DS is 2. I think it's mainly because I want to know how close in age/development our kids are. If DS is playing next to another toddler, I'm curious to know how developmentally close they are because, like others have said, there is an enormous difference between 15 months and 18 months. However, when anyone who doesn't have kids with them asks me I say "he turned 1 in January."
I don't have kids but I agree with the developmental age thing. I'm just here to ask- can we just take this to the other extreme? *straight face* "Oh, he'll be 156 months tomorrow!" .."Moooomm! Stop being weird!"
I used months until 1, then I would say "she's 1" or "she turned one in May" or "She'll be 1.5 in November". For the last couple months I've just been saying "She'll be 2 in May." It makes it easier for people. I don't mind the months.
Wait until you friend someone from here and she does her kid in WEEKS up to and past her first birthday. "I can't believe our little girl is 65 weeks old today!" .... I effing can, you post about it all the damn time
I use months up until maybe 18 months. Now that my daughter is 22 months, I say almost 2. I don't really see a big enough difference between 20 months and 24 months, and the changes are all different for different kids anyway, so I've had no reason to be more specific.

I have a friend IRL on facebook who has been posting a photo of her baby every week since he was born... and they're now on week 51... I sincerely hope after the first birthday she switches to months...

I feel like up til 23 months is acceptable since clothing is labeled in month up until 2. After that 1/2 years work fine.

You will be so surprised how much your one year old or two year old can change in just a month or two. That's why we use months when talking age. I remember when DD turned 2, I was amazed what someone else's 2yo was doing that mine wasnt. But their 2yo was 2.5yo, and had developed a lot in 6 months. Now at almost 2.5, my DD is in the same place theirs was. I think until age 3 or 4, they're still developing so much each day, week, month... that they can't be lumped as a 1yo or 2yo.

Re: OT- age rant
I understand it to a degree I suppose, cause at that age there are still developmental milestone but when does it end...? 36 months?
