Where to put the nursery

Hey ladies I need some advice. This is my first baby. Our home has two bedroom downstairs, one in which we were going to make the nursery. The entire second floor is the master with a loft. Some have suggested to turn the loft into a nursery, but the baby would have no privacy. If it's nap time there is no way to enclose that area. I know for the first couple months we will keep him in our room beside the bed, but after shouldn't he have his own room even if it's down stairs?

Re: Where to put the nursery

  • A baby doesn't need privacy.  I would go with the loft, I wouldn't want my LO downstairs too far away from me.

  • Hmm. I do think it's better to have the baby on the same floor as the master bedroom, because it's easier to get up and take care of them once they are not sleeping in your room. It's also nice to have the nursery in a room that isn't on the main floor, they'd be a little bit more removed from general household noises while they nap.

I would do the nursery in a main floor bedroom, and have a place (like a pack n play) for the baby to sleep in the master bedroom. You will find what works best for your baby for napping. That way the changing table and all the babies clothes would be on the main floor. Which would be more convenient.
  • Thank you! I definitely want to keep him upstairs but we can still make the downstairs room his actually nursery.

I would use a downstairs bedroom with a door. After baby is born you can have her sleep in a pack & play/bassinet in your room so she is nearby for nighttime feedings.
  • Also remember that baby doesn't always have to nap in the same place.  If you want to have the proper nursery, where they sleep at night in the loft I think that's best, but you can still have a pack n play or even a floor bed in another room in the house so you can put baby down for a nap there depending on where you want them to be napping (e.g. if you want to vacuum the bedroom, you can put them down for their nap somewhere else.  When my first was little we wuld move his bassinet all over the house and have him napping where we could keep an eye on him.  We transitioned him to his crib at around 4 months and at first we did all naps there to get him established into a routine but once we were sure he had transitioned well we started putting him for naps in the pack n play as well if we wanted him to nap somewhere else.
  • If the loft isn't enclosed, I would not make it the nursery because then you're not going to have a separate space when the baby is older and you'll be walking on eggshells in your own room.  I wouldn't like that.  I'd make the nursery out of one of the downstairs bedrooms and get a good monitor.  Keep the baby in your bedroom in a basinette or PNP until they're a few months old, then make the transition to the crib.
