OPK question: digital vs. Wondfo

So, I have a question and thought I would ask you professional OPK users. I was away this weekend and just got home yesterday afternoon. I did not bring OPKs (or my thermometer) with me thinking it was too early, but of course had some symptom correlation to possible O a few days ago. I decided to just start doing OPKs when I got home to see if I maybe didn't O/was gearing/geared up etc. Fast forward to last night around 9, and I get a blaring positive on a Wondfo, like no question, I even dipped another and it was also positive. To double confirm I dipped one of the Clearblue Advanced OPK which are supposed to be used with FMU, but I figured if I was turning a Wondfo positive it would show something...nope just showed a "low fertility" empty circle. This morning with FMU, low fertility and a negative OPK.

Anyways, I guess I'm wondering what you all think the chances of a false positive on the wondfo is? Or would you put more trust in the digitals? Or just eff the whole thing and keep doing EOD until forever

I will keep taking my temps the next few days and see if they are high/stay high in my post-O range to "confirm" as best as possible, but obviously won't have enough info for that. I have good BD coverage either way, just curious your thoughts. Thanks!

Re: OPK question: digital vs. Wondfo

  • Whenever you use a clearblue advanced OPK its always going to say low fertility the first time you use it no matter what because it has no hormone level to compare it to. I've never used wondfos only the digitial but usually I had one or two days of low fertility, then high fertility, then peak. Actually the cycle that I got pregnant I never even got a peak reading, only high- must of missed my surge. Any time I get high readings I just assume I'm fertile and start BDing.

  • I've never used the Clearblue, but I use Wondfo OPKs every month. Like @Spartanrd4 said, the Clearblue might need a baseline before it can determine peak LH. It's possible then that when you tested and got a clear positive on the Wondfos that you were at the very end of your LH surge and that's why they were negativity this morning. In my personal experience, I learned to rely more on my CM than anything else.

  • I've only used Clearblue.  I think it says in the directions to only take it with fmu so that could also explain the evening one being negative.  No idea why it would still be negative this morning though if you are turning Wondfos, unless possibly because you took 2 tests so close together (not approximately 24 hours apart) it wouldn't change?
Usually with Clearblue digitals I get low fertility for a while, then 2 days of high fertility, and then the peak fertility smiley face that stays lit for 2 days.
Ugh. Sorry you are so frustrated!  I hope you can figure it out soon.

  • I have always found cheapies easiest to interpret.  Solely based on my bias, I would trust your Wondfo.  If you want to confirm that the surge is over, you can keep testing with Wondfos to make sure they're getting lighter.  Definitely keep temping to see if a shift happens.  I hope this helps!

  • I've had wondfos predict a temp shift that Clearblue missed.  I also have super short surges that come and go in a three hour period so I appreciate how cheap wondfos are and don't mind using 3-4 a day for a week when need be.
  • @housewifehobbyist good to know. I had a temp shift Saturday but negative clear blue that looked really dark Friday then lighter Saturday and I am betting it just missed the surge since they only only once a day that I test with.

  • I've gotten pregnant successfully with both. I have quick surges so my Wonfos go from quite negative to very positive quickly. My advanced clearblue also misses the "high fertility" stage and skips right to peak.
  • Thanks everyone! We'll see what happens. @thepax89 I used to be a very short surger as well, until this miscarriage when I was getting more and more positive OPKs which was very unusual for me.
  • The only times I've ever used a CBAD to confirm a Wondfo +OPK I also got a peak on the CBAD. However, the first cycle I used the CBAD I had been using it for 3 days (low, high, high). The second time I used the same holder from last cycle with the left over test sticks. It was the first time I had used the CBAD that cycle but I'm assuming since I used the same hold last cycle also it had already set a baseline.

I'd personally trust the Wondfo in this scenario. The only time I've gotten "false positive" Wondfo OPKs were the first 2 cycles after my MC around CD14 each time. I'd get one "maybe positive" in the morning where it was hard to tell if the test line was as dark as the control line (I never really get test lines that are darker than the control) then a couple of hours later it would be obviously negative again. Usually on my real LH surge I can get a positive OPK for at least 1 full day, sometimes 2.

But basically I feel like Wondfos are very accurate. I've never really had problems with them. I'd trust it. That doesn't mean you'll definitely O but.... no OPK can tell you that with certainty.

  • Thanks for the info regarding the baseline reading @NamelessAria, @Spartanrd4 and @MooFish2364 . The digitals OPKs I used were brand new and had just been delivered while I had been away. After reading on the website it looks like the baseline info you mentioned was correct. I have a feeling the positive wondfo that night was at the tail end of my surge and I have had a consistent fade-out pattern since that positive one. I'm so glad I had the wondfos to test with, as much as they can frustrate me, I think I trust their simplicity sometimes more than the digital.
