Hey all! Anyone using Hylands Colic Tablets? Started using them for my 3 1/2 month old son. So far they're pretty great, but worried they're too good to be true? Plan on asking his dr but wanted some opinions..
@Maria0407 You might try a different brand of formula. I remember from DS that the same type of formula can vary a lot by brand.
DD is very gassy because of upper lip tie. When we talked to her pedi about gas remedies she discouraged things like gripe water and the colic drops. Herbal supplements aren't regulated like drugs are. For this reason she recommended simethecone. DD has done very well with it. She's still gassy but passes it easily with the drops so she isn't fussy from pain like she is without them.
I hope you can find some relief for your little one.
Babies are usually growing out of the colicky stage by now. We never used them but DD has outgrown her fits. I think we as new parents now know what she wants so she cries less.
I'm using them more to soothe his gas pain.. he's not colic. I should've mentioned that. sorry.. they relax him and he's able to nap without waking from gas pains
not trying to be mean but sounds like you're being judgemental.. whats giving him gas is the formula and his baby digestive system. it's not like I'm feeding him cheeseburgers. I can't avoid feeding him. just wondering if anyone was using them. geez.
We've just done simethicone drops and probiotics. I add the gas drops to each bottle when DD gets them and feel like that makes the biggest difference for her of everything we've tried. That and when we changed bottles. She seems to get a slightly better seal with Phillips Avent than she did with Dr Brown's standard (she takes a preemie nipple still).
Side note: I've avoided Hyland teething tablets because I'm not comfortable giving my baby something containting belladonna regardless of dose.

Not trying to sound judgemental either. Just stating my opinion. If it's the formula perhaps an easier digestible formula, smaller nipples etc. I would try to find the root of the problem and that's all I was saying.
Hyland gas drops were recommended by the pediatrician and they really helped when baby girl was little and had a hard time moving her own gas. Now that she is bigger and more active this isn't a problem so we stopped using them a while ago. But they were helpful for us for a time.
Without knowing what type of formula her baby is on I just gave my best advise. Perhaps since her baby is having gas pains a gentler formula would be a better option then just giving gas drops at every feeding. All I was doing was giving advise about trying to fix the root of the problem, not patch the holes. I am sorry if it was taken the wrong way. And I do know that some babies just get gassy, but again without much background info, I just said what i would do.
Not trying to be mean here but... Shouldnt you have figured out by now what makes your LO gassy and how to avoid such thing?
This assumes that her baby has been gassy for a long time now. Babies' digestive systems are always developing. My LO just started being significantly more gassy in the last couple weeks than he was at the beginning of his life. How am I suppose to just know what is going on in his body?
To me, the fact that you prefaced it with "not trying to be mean" means that you knew it would come across as mean.
thanks ladies..I appreciate the suggestions. he is already on a sensitive formula and a slow nipple on the bottle. Some days he's extremely uncomfortable and some days he's fine. Looking to ease the pains for him. I know that it's not always gas and that there are growth spurts and teething.. Was curious if any of you tried or are using those colic tablets. I havent spoken to his ped yet about them. I plan on calling tomorrow.
DS had some pretty hefty issues with gas pains and formula intolerance when he hit the 3-4 week mark. We tired EVERYTHING! Gas drops, gripe water, probiotic drops, even those things in different brands and organic/non-organic. It was a nightmare until we finally got him on Nutramigen and a visit with a Pediatric GI Dr.
He advised us not to give him anything but formula. Because babies digestive systems are maturing, developing, adjusting, the more that we are putting into their bellies, the more they have to figure out how to work it out, process it and break it down. Makes sense, so for us, it was best that we just nix all of the over the counter meds and deal with what we had going on with him. Part of it was colic, but once we got him on the Nutramigen and began up'ing his intake at each feeding, it actually got significantly better.
There are days that he still has the gas pains and does the scrunching, crying out, and can sometimes be difficult to console, but overall he is able to work through them and it doesn't last more than 5-10 minutes.
Is your LO possibly constipated? That could be causing him tummy pain as well. We were using gentlease and DD still had major gas and would always wake herself up from naps with gas pains, she was also really constipated. I think hers also attributed to the formula and possible dairy intolerance because once she switched to soy it had gotten much better. She still farts a lot but it's not trapped inside so she's not waking herself up crying as much. I think at your next appointment you should bring up the gas and maybe even ask if theirs a gentler formula for him to go on. Babies are so confusing. I hope you find something that works soon!
I don't believe he's constipated. has movement everyday and sometimes twice a day. his ped said better off not giving him the tablets and stick with gas drops. I'm going to bring it up at the next visit and see if they suggest switching formula. he's on similac sensitive right now. hes always farting too! most of the time he deals with it but sometimes it wakes him up and he can't get back to sleep..hoping this won't last too much longer!
I'd read that the hyland tablets aren't recommended because in testing they discovered that the amount of active ingredient is inconsistent from tab to tab, so you never know how much your baby is actually getting.

This is the part I talk about with herbal supplements not being regulated by the FDA. There's no guarantee you're getting what the label says.
