October 2016 Moms

Telling your boss/work

I went back a few pages and haven't seen this discussed yet, so apologies if I missed it.

It's getting to that time where all us working Octo moms will need to inform our jobs. I'm at 12 weeks, and have had two positive scans, so I could let them know any day, but I'm hesitating. I don't know why. If I had an evaluation coming up it might make sense to keep it a secret until after then. But I AM sort of relishing flying under the pregnancy radar and not being watched or judged. (I haven't had to miss any work and I haven't had any m/s.)
So ladies, when will you inform your work? Or have you already? And what led/will lead to your decision of when to tell?

Re: Telling your boss/work

  • I told my boss about 2 weeks ago (at 8ish weeks) because I was injured on the job and normally an xray would be in order but because I'm pregnant the doctor said no. I figured my boss would be curious so I just headed it off. My job is labor intensive so anything that could potentially affect my ability to work is relevant.

  • I told my supervisor this past week also because of safety/accommodations and just because I can't really hide this blump much longer

I'm planning to tell the week after next. I'll be 12 weeks then. One of my work friends knows, but I'm ready to finally admit to the full team why I've been skipping happy hour, and bailing on lunches out (because of m/s). I would consider telling at the end of this week (when I'm 11 weeks), but my boss is out on vacation.

Its weird and i can't explain why, but I've been nervous telling people this time around. It's not worry that something will go wrong, but it just seems different with the second baby. We had a big announcement with the first pregnancy, and I'm really telling people in such anticlimactic ways that it feels odd. I actually texted one of my close friends to tell her... Haha

  • I'm trying to hold off on telling work for reasons there I don't want to get into. I'm gonna tell around 16 weeks if I can hide it that long.
  • I told mine before we started IVF since I would be taking a lot of time off for appointments.

  • I told when I was 8 weeks. I have a very physical and dangerous job, so I wanted my boss to be aware. He was super supportive. I'm glad I told him early.

  • I told my direct supervisor at about 8 weeks, when my morning sickness was at its worst. She recommended I wait until closer to 15 weeks to make a total announcement and tell HR. As I am officially in maternity pants and at 14w2d, it's about time to start talking to others.

I told one of my coworkers as well, just so I had an ally when I needed extra help or time.

  • I got my bfp 2/3 and started my new office from a promotion on 2/22. we were seeing the RE and I had to tell my direct supervisor and one girl I inherited cases from.

i have told avout 5 people in the office. one being the other pregnant girl I sit by bc I need someone who gets it. lol.

everyone at at my old office knows. after my 2 mc I just was very open about the entire process and the support was overwhelming. I've never been open about my personal life so this was scary and I'm still trying to adjust to people being supportive and happy for me.

I told my work just before I hit 12 weeks.  A few people knew earlier....6 weeks or so. I teach high school and have not told the students yet but that will probably happen soon.

  • I have another ultrasound scheduled at 13w3d. If that goes well, I will tell my boss that same week. I'm showing already and I'm certain my coworkers suspect that I'm pregnant. However, I've had losses in the past and I figured it was easier to be the subject of rumors than to announce early and then have to give a sad update. I'll be SO happy when it's out in the open though!
  • I haven't told work yet. I have my NT scan at 12w,5d and plan to tell my supervisor then. It will be awhile until I tell HR because there isnt much they do unless I need to take time off before maternity leave. The bigger question is....I have an interview for a new job that starts late August. Im not sure if or what to tell them in the interview re: pregnancy. I gut is telling me not to tell them until offered the position and negotiations start. I dont want any bias before then.

  • I told my supervisor two weeks ago and I've been procrastinating telling my boss. We go on vacation Wednesday, so I need to tell him either Monday or Tuesday as I'll hit 2nd Trimester and plan to publicly announce while we're in Hawaii. Boss is FB friends with me so I don't feel it's right for him to find out via FB.

  • It's interesting to hear the different stories. It has been hard not telling anyone at all at work. It would be nice if I could tell one or two people just to get it off my chest, but I'm newer and while I like my coworkers, I'm not sure they wouldn't spill the beans. I need my boss to be the first to know. But I've also started telling people in my personal life who run in similar circles, so I feel I need to have the talk with my work soon despite my hesitance.

  • I am dreading telling my boss I´m pregnant. I´ll be 12 weeks tomorrow and I hope my blump stays small enough that I don´t have to tell him until the end of the month. When I interviewed for my job 2.5 years ago he said "I know I´m not legally supposed to ask this but you aren´t going to get pregnant in the next year, right?". So I can´t imagine he is going to be pleased or supportive when I share my news.  :s
  • @Morningstar80 Your boss was not legally allowed to ask you about pregnancy plans during your interview.   :#
  • It's such a personal decision and really depends on your work situation. I told my boss at 7 weeks because he knew about my previous loss, is incredibly supportive, and has 7 children of his own. I told my co-workers at 12 weeks and everyone is so excited. My due date is in the work calendar. I realize how lucky I am and would just caution others to know your rights and only tell when you're comfortable.
  • I told my boss when I was around 7 weeks. I'm the type of person who has never taken a sick day and rarely take times off. So when I told my boss I had a doctor's appointment I realized I should just tell him after that so that way he knows why I'm out of work. I told him the day after my first appointment and he said he had a feeling that might be it. He has been very supportive. I also had to tell my Town Manager shortly after because of my budget being due and he would wonder why my PT assistant needed so many extra hours (for my maternity leave). I also told my assistant early on so that she would know what all was going on.

  • I told last week after we told my family. Part of the reason is my dad works at the same company as me and he's REALLY bad at keeping secrets, so I wanted my boss to hear it from me first. And I absolutely adore my boss, so that's reason two. We did a restructuring a couple of months ago and he got promoted and asked to take me with him as his admin, so we've been navigating some tricky waters together lately.

  • @ball4768 I knew it was illegal and he knew it was illegal but we´re in Spain and our company doesn´t have an HR dept. so my boss is technically who I would have had to file a complaint with. Once I tell him though, I will be a protected class so my job won´t be in jeopardy and I´ll get paid time off that is regulated by the govt (so it´s nothing he he has a say over).

Even so, I am not looking forward to the actual conversation. :(
  • @Morningstar80 At least you know your rights before you talk to him! Best of luck!
  • Just over 13 weeks and have recently told my boss. I do a lot of heavy lifting and turning with my job, so I let her know.
  • I was really nervous telling my manager, but it went surprisingly well. I told about 3 weeks ago. I'm the only person who does the reporting and invoicing. So I just wanted to give them a heads up. Plus I can't suck in the gut anymore and I look 5 to 6 months pregnant.
  • I told my boss as soon as I got my bfp, I hadn't even missed my pd yet. We were friends before she was my boss and I wasn't comfortable with making up stories for why I needed to leave for appts. and stuff. I'm thinking of telling the rest of my coworkers by the end of this week as long as my NT scan goes well tomorrow. I'll be 12 weeks on Saturday and we're all going to a coworkers wedding. It would be nice to not have to make up excuses for not drinking all night and it would be really nice if I could let my blumb show without having to wear a tent of a dress to try and hide it or be uncomfortably sucking in and/or wearing control top tights. That sounds miserable.

  • I told the head of my department today, right after we had a meeting with our HR rep to go over our employee opinion survey lol. I felt it was the right time since HR was fresh on his mind.

  • A few of my friends at work knew right away. I told my principals at 11 weeks the day before spring break, and my students at 12 when we came back.  Teachers found out from the kids mostly, ha.
