Exercise at 34 weeks

How are all the mama's still working out doing? I had to cut back to 2 miles a day and only lifting 3 days a weeks instead of everyday. 3rd trimester is kicking my butt!!!

Re: Exercise at 34 weeks

  • I'm still doing all my regular routines (which are not that hardcore: light weights and yoga at home, elliptical at the gym, walking 2-4 miles a day between dog walking and a walking commute to work). Main change is that I've had to swap out water and replace it with a lightly caloric drink (I'm doing half tea/half lemonade) to keep my blood sugar up on the elliptical. Additionally I'm not going quite as fast as I used to, and I've had to be a little more conscious about warming up gradually, but otherwise I've been fortunate enough to be able to continue pretty much normally so far.

    34w3d today.

  • I only go to the BabyFit (modified CrossFit) class twice a week now and I will say that I am so sore and tired in between. I do some walking on other days but that's about it.

  • Have completely stopped running and am now just doing hikes with my dogs a couple of times a week (2-4 miles) and yoga. Third trimester has made staying active so much harder!

  • I still do pretty much the full workout I used to do. However, if I feel my legs start to fatigue I decrease the incline on the treadmill.

Today, however, I am going to have to skip the gym due to stomach cramps I'm having from an unrelated health issue. :/ My meds aren't really working.

  • I go to the gym 3-4 times a week to do a combination class (light weights, squats, arms etc.), zumba, elliptical, and some strength training. But man, I'm starting to get exhausted so sometimes I have to go a little easier on my body.

  • Starting last week, walking gives me terrible pelvic, upper inner thigh pain. I took 3 days off over the weekend and walked for 45 minutes this morning, and I'm now in awful pain. So how exactly am I supposed to keep walking if this is what happens?! :(

Honestly, walking makes me more sore than anything. I can do HIIT and be fine, but if I go for a walk around the block, I sit on the couch for the rest of the day.
  • My OB keeps reminding me that I should be walking 30 Mins a day 5 days a week . . . I used to do much more walking than that, as well as some home workouts with weights, resistance bands and a bit of yoga mixed in. For the last two weeks I can barely muster up a slow walk to the store. My back and legs and shoulders hurt so bad every time. I have cut my work outs down to just doing some mild stretched and yoga at home.  I can't deal with much else. :(

I'm not a doctor, physical therapist, or anyone else with any particular expertise -- when it comes to fitness, I am totally just a Random Internet Person -- but over the past couple of weeks I've often noticed some pelvic tightness and pain when beginning walks too.

What works for me is to do some pelvic tilts (nothing big, just very basic belly dance tilts -- side to side, front to back, then a couple of hip circles in either direction) to loosen up the tightness, then to just walk through the initial discomfort until it subsides. It usually takes about half a mile and then I get into a rhythm and it's not so bad, and afterward the discomfort goes away and I feel much better than if I hadn't made the effort to keep going.

ymmv -- and, again, I am not suggesting that it's a good idea to disregard serious pain signals from your body (if it's terrible pain, don't do it!) -- but I've often found that powering through a few minutes of initial discomfort pays dividends over the long run. More than that I wouldn't risk (if anything's uncomfortable for a prolonged period, it's probably serious enough to warrant consultation with an actual expert before continuing), but mild to moderate discomfort is something that I will generally try to work through, because getting over that initial hump is the price I have to pay for staying active at this point.

But, as always, do it carefully and gradually and if it really does hurt a lot, take it easy. We all only have a few more weeks to go and it's not worth straining yourself into injury at this point.
  • I've tried stretching, warming up slowly, the works. I also stretch for another 15 minutes or so after I'm done. But like last week, it hurt for 2-3 days, and today it's awful. I can barely walk if I stand up after sitting for any amount of time. It's way beyond stretching or discomfort. It's just all of the sudden kind of thing. I didn't take any breaks from working out, otherwise I'd figure maybe it's my body getting back into it. It's like I traded night hip pain for pelvic/inner thigh pain.

I'll ask my doctor about it Thursday and report back. I would hate it if I couldn't walk anymore considering we bought a treadmill for the basement, and I enjoy it. I don't want to have to go to our crummy nearby snap fitness and use their ancient elliptical.
  • @yogahh It seems to be weekly now. Didn't we used to have a weekly exercise thread? Or maybe that was food?

There was a tuesday health/fitness thread but it stopped a month or so ago. I guess whoever started them didn't want to (or didn't have time) to keep them going. I was going to start putting them up but by the time I wake up and get out of bed its past noon for you guys in the USA. I usually end up not posting on half the weekly stuff (unless I wake up and can't sleep at night) because I get in there when everyone has had enough.  :D

haha Maybe I will try to remember to bring it back. It was nice to have that thread every week.

  • My workouts have basically been walking lately. I made myself go for a walk today even though I was already tired and had other things I felt like I should be doing.

  • You guys all sound like you're doing great !!! :-) before pregnancy I did Title Boxing 4 days a week... Then morning sickness kept me out, then doctors orders didn't allow working out because of placenta previa... I've had the ok to work out mildly since week 19 so no kickboxing. I keep it to very tame yoga :-) I miss it so much!!! Can't wait to get back on the wagon when the time is right!!
  • Still getting in my 10,000 steps daily. I haven't experienced any of the soreness nor pelvic pain that others have described.

I'm so envious of you! I was doing 10,000 steps daily but I'm getting that awful pelvic pain everyone else is. But when I was walking that much, my legs and butt looked *fabulous*. Nothing works like carrying around an extra 30 pounds on walks to get buns of steel!
  • I ordered a support band yesterday:

    https://www.amazon.com/AZMED-Maternity-Breathable-Abdominal-Support/dp/B0113WE0QS?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

I should get it tomorrow. We'll see if it helps with the pelvic pain at all.

  • @TheThornBird To be fair, LO is still in breech, so that probably reduces the current chances of pelvic pain. I'd totally take it to get him to flip!

Having had LO in both positions (he can't seem to make up his mind!) I'll say that my experience has been more back  pain with breech, but more pelvic pain with head down.

In terms of exercise, I walk daily and do body-weight squats, but all other exercise has been traded in for only chasing, lifting, and playing with my toddler from the beginning when a SCH put me on orders to reduce exercise (it happened last pregnancy too). I'm hoping to slowly get back into lifting and running post partum again like last time.
  • I am still doing small body weight exercising for about 20-30 mins for 4 days a week- the other 2-3 days I was walking but have had to cut that out since I have to pee about 5 minutes into my walk!
  • Might be of interest to anyone who needed a little extra motivation: https://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2016/04/06/are-we-born-to-run/

  • The having to pee is certainly getting in the way of my running! I've still been doing 5+ miles walking a day, but cut down on jogging.

    Weights 3x a week.

Yoga. But you know what I've been doing instead of yoga lately?! Sleeping! I've been a lazy bum the last week and kind of feel guilty for napping instead of doing yoga, but kinda not feeling guilty at all. I LOVE NAPS!
