Oversupply

My daughter is 5 weeks old and has always just ate on one breast at a time and that's been enough for her. (She's gaining weight and getting lots of wet+dirty diapers) but literally doesn't eat more than 6-10 min at a time. She eats every two hours during the day. The problem is I'll pump once (Just 1 side- never both) in the morning and sometimes in the afternoon and evening because I'll be so engorged+ leaking+boobs will sort of hurt. My question is, is it okay to just pump 1oz (I could probably get 2-4oz) but don't want to make my supply go up) is it okay to just pump a little off?

sorry for the book! Hope this makes sense! Who knew BF could be so rough. She's always had a great latch, and it's nice she doesn't eat for 40+min! I never thought having too much milk would be a problem, but I feel like I'm a slave to my pump.

Re: Oversupply

  • The better option would be to hand express some if you're feeling painfully engorged. Leaking is totally normal, so if you're not painful, then just let it be. Even at just an ounce, you're still telling your body you need that ounce... and let's be honest, pumping is a PITA. Also, if you're saving that ounce to feed baby at some point, it's not very balanced milk (all fore milk, no hindmilk).

  • Try those milk savers if you're leaking that much. It might help with the engorgement too

Thanks ladies!! I meant to add, she hardly ever empties the breast she eats as well. So frustrating! Like I say, she's having dirty and wet diapers, is gaining weight and is a happy baby. I just hate having so much milk!
