Highlighting my hair?

I need to do something with my hair but I'm paranoid! I've heard it's ok or its best to use something that's not permanent. I want to highlight my hair so there is limited chemicals on my scalp. Do you ladies color your hair? I'm 16 weeks and most of what I've read says wait until the second trimester.

Thanks!

Re: Highlighting my hair?

  • I've been wondering the same. Last time my OB was fine with it. In fact, when I asked him if it was ok he was like "yeah, my wife dyed her hair during pregnancy". This time around he specifically told me not to so I'm a little confused. The next appt I have in 2 weeks I plan to ask him again (since I'll be about 19w along).

  • As long as you're in a well ventilated area you are fine
  • My midwife said to go with a demi instead of a permenant, which I do anyways.

  • I just got my hair highlighted on Wednesday since my OB had told me multiple times it was fine since the dye doesn't actually touch our scalp.  I waited until my 2nd trimester too just to be careful :-)

  • I color my hair (and play around with ombre), and have had no qualms about getting it done...though I did wait until the second trimester. Highlights don't really sit at your roots/scalp, so I would be less worried about getting those done. :)
  • Everything I've heard/read says that highlighting is fine since the color doesn't go directly on your scalp (the risk comes from the hair dye chemicals seeping through your scalp). But with foil/highlights, there's usually about a 1/2" or so of hair at the top, so I think it's safe. So I think that especially now that you're in the second tri, highlighting is fine! I actually am dying to get mine done, I need a little brightness up around my face.

I think it's good to do stuff like that for yourself too, as long as it's safe, to keep us feeling a little bit more like "us" during pregnancy when everything is changing so much.

My OB has no issues with me coloring or highlighting my hair.  I did it with my first and I am this time around.  If it does worry you go with highlights since the foils don't touch your scalp.  I just had a full highlight professionally done at 14 weeks and plan to keep up with them the entire pregnancy.  I already feel huge and tired at the very least I can have decent hair  :D
  • Thanks! I think it's important also to do things for ourselves! I feel like a hot mess and doing something to my hair will help.

My doctor said it was fine to do at any point. I dyed my hair dark (from blonde) so I wouldn't have to keep up with it during pregnancy. He also recommended I go to an aveda salon as the color has less chemicals overall :)
  • I've had a different OB for all 3 of my pregnancies and they've all said it's totally fine.
  • My Doctor said highlights are fine too. Got it done last week as felt like a million bucks!
  • Needing to go in and now I've found a few strands of white hair. I've been on the fence about going in and have even made an appointment but wussed out and canceled it. I too have gotten the all clear from Dr. I just can't convince myself to do it.
  • My Dr says it's fine after 2nd trimester. I colored and highlighted my hair a few weeks ago. I also did it with my first. My sister does my hair so she is extra careful not to get it on my scalp.

  • I'm actually dying to get my hair highlighted to make myself feel pretty again!! Definitely will be calling to make an appointment ASAP. Give me some sunny streaks!
  • Getting my hair cut and highlighted tomorrow!   So excited to feel revitalized again!  (My hair currently looks like dead straw connected to a brown mouse coat).
  • I've dyed my hair every time so far with no negative affects.  I've always been told it's more how your skin/hair might react with the different hormones in your system.  So test a patch first.  And make sure you have the windows open.  You'll be fine - Enjoy!

  • I've done highlights once already, and I am going again in a month. I was a little worried about fumes and smells making me sick, but the stations in my salon are pretty far apart and I had no issues. GL!
  • I'm gonna go for it, I dyed my hair with my daughter but I get paranoid. She's fine. I'm worried for no reason. I look terrible! It has to happen!

  • There's no evidence that dying your hair has any adverse effect on a fetus. I died mine all through my last pregnancy and just got it done a few days ago. Go for it!
  • @heyheyklee I'm with you - I haven't had my hair done since November and I look awful. I'm getting mine done Thursday. I must!
  • I dyed mine through my first pregnancy and plan on continuing this one! Just went yesterday and I feel so much better now with my fresh hair!
  • I say it's fine. But I also drink caffeine, eat cold cuts and a hundred other things I'm "not supposed to do" so take my opinion with a grain of salt. ;)

  • My last pregnancy I stopped dying the entire 9 months...not a good look. This time I refreshed my highlights at 12 weeks, I was on the fence as well l, but like everyone else noted, the dye doesn't come in contact with your skin. I'm so glad I did, I felt so refreshed and human again!
  • I waited until I was out of the first trimester to highlight my hair. My salon does a glaze afterwards- I skipped that because it touches the scalp.
highlights are safe! I felt like I received a huge makeover!!!
