Trouble TTC

Intro-Loss mentioned

Hi ladies,

It's time for an introduction, I suppose.

My name is Erin. Living in Dallas currently and coming up on 3 years of marriage with my hubs, TTC for about 2. First pregnancy was in October 2014 and we lost the baby around week 6. We took a few months off of trying and have been back at it for nearly a year.

My annual exam is next week and I think it's time to dig a little deeper to see why we're not getting pregnant again. Family doc said last year that it was good that I at least got pregnant once and that it may just take some time. I should also mention that the hubs and I are overweight and doc said this may be a factor. I've lost 47 pounds and hubs is down 30 so we're making progress.

My my questions are... How long did you all wait to see if there was a deeper cause for not getting pregnant? What type of testing is done first? Who gets tested first (me or hubs)? Just curious on what to expect.

Thanks ladies, looking forward to having the support of a group!

  • Hello and welcome! Typical protocol is if you aren't pregnant after 1 yr of ttc you should see a specialist- less if you're over 35. I'm 37 but wanted to do the natural thing- did a naturopath who actually got me to start cycling. Then I did 6 months of accupuncture. Finally gave in and went to an RE.

In our case which seems to be typical we were tested at the same time- bought a special package for ppl without fertility insurance. Typical tests for you include and HSG to make sure your tubes are open, ultrasound and various blood tests.

Welcome & good luck! I am sorry about your loss but it's great you are taking control of your health

  • Welcome and I'm sorry for your loss.  I agree with @lablover78 that 1 year of TTC without success is an automatic diagnosis of infertility, and good reason to see a specialist.   Congratulations on losing the weight, I struggle with mine and know how had that can be.  Sometimes hormonal imbalances are the source of both the infertility and the weight (PCOS, etc).    I hope that your stay will be short and sweet.

  • We got referred to an RE about 8 months after TTC on our own.   I had various blood tests and an HSG and DH had a test done as well to make sure he wasn't adding to our troubles.  Congratulations on the weight loss, I also struggle with mine and have been working at taking more off.   Good luck on your journey and welcome to the group.  I hope your stay won't be too long!

  • Congrats on the weight loss, that is awesome! I agree with the other comments here, it would be appropriate for you to seek the help of an RE at this point. We did our testing a little early; DH had a SA after 6 months (which was abnormal) so I went in for my testing around 9 months. We're still deciding when we will start the recommended treatment of IUIs. Good luck to you, and I hoe your stay here is short :)

  • Hi Erin! We're just getting started on our testing, but so far we've done bloodwork and DH did his SA.  I'm supposed to be getting an ultrasound soon too.  I've heard an HSG is usually done by the RE to make sure your tubes are open.  I'm impressed by the weight loss!  We are also working on this and it's hard!!
