STM+ Precipitous labor?

Long story short, I had an unplanned natural birth with my second after L&D was 4 1/2 hours. After talking with my ob he said i have precipitous labor (as far as I can gather it means I labor quickly). I'm really nervous this will happen again. I don't want another unmedicated birth.

How long was your labor? Anybody else not have time for an epidural?

Re: STM+ Precipitous labor?

  • Not sure how much help I'll be. My water broke and 21 hours later DS was born. I chose not to have an epidural.

  • This happened to a friend of mine so for her next child the doctor labeled her file so she was flagged for short labor. Got her to the front of the line for an epidural and they checked her in from triage very quickly. She was able to get the epidural. maybe your doctor or hospital can do something similar! :)

@misslissa32. Good to know thank you!!
  • My first labor was 3.5 hours. I got an epidural but shouldn't have bc it was too late, I was already pushing. The nurses just didn't believe me. So the epi didn't work. With my son I was was in labor for 3 hours, but since I knew what I was looking for I got to the hospital before I was in pain. I explained my first labor to my burse, and that I wanted the saline drip in before we did paperwork so I could get an epidural in time. She thankfully listened, and I got it 30 minutes after my water broke, maybe an hour. So I wasn't in pain for more than an hour, and it was in full effect for pushing. That labor was so much better, and I remember more bc I wasn't drugged up on other stuff and wasn't in so much pain. This is my third, and I'm preparing myself for the likely possibility that I won't have time for one this time. But as long as I get a nurse that listens to me, I have a chance. Not being a first time mom makes it more likely the nurses will trust your judgment. So although I'm hoping this labor doesn't go any faster than my last, I'm planning on it, just to be safe.
  • Me!
My first I was checked and sent home, I was only 1cm, at 8:30am. Later that day labor got worse, I guess then it was real...I went in around 5:15pm and was 7cm and had my son at 6:36pm.
My second I went in with labor and contractions at 8:30pm, was sent home because I was barely 1cm. (Sidenote midwife was pissed she had in my file to keep me even if 1cm as I have quick L&D, but the shift change nurse failed to read that in my file.) Went back at 11:50pm was "ready" and close to 10, mind you I just walked across the street from parking garage and up the elevator to the 14th floor lol, and had 15 minutes later. They wheeled me from triage to my room as they didn't want me to walk.

so needless to say I'm terrified with #3 and that she will be born in the car

  • Yup. My first was born just a few hours after my water broke and my second was the same.  I go from 0 to 60 in a second, none of this labor building up business. I chose to have my second without an epidural as I was already 9 cm when I got to the hospital and figured I was already so far I could just go for it. I plan to do the same this time too.
  • FTM here, but my mom had 6 kids and a history of precipitous labor. Thing is, it doesn't mean your kiddo will be born shortly after you go in labor... It just means that when things decide to get going, they move FAST. When delivering me, my Mamma's doc was about to go to break, got three steps out the door and the nurse called him back because my mom went from 3cm to 10cm that fast and her water broke.

On the flip side, my Mamma was in labor 13h with my little brother and was at 2cm for a really long time. Then, when she dilated further, she very quickly moved to 10cm. And he was on his way out before the docs were ready. That was kid #6, and she knew it was gonna happen quick when it did because it happened with all 6 of us (I was #1).

Idk if this was much help, but hope it helps with some perspective. :)
    Good luck! <3
  • My mom had me in the car on the way to the hospital after a 3hr labor at home. She had a very high pain tolerance.

With my DD, my water broke at home (at 35w) and I had her 5hrs later. Got the epi, and they didn't even turn it on I was pushing and 3 mins later, she was out.

I'm slightly nervous because we do a lot of traveling for work in the summer. The most we'll be is 2.5 hours from home, but still... People say the second can be faster.

I also have precipitous labor. As does my mom. Her longest labor was just short of 4 hours. My first was 3.5 hours start to finish.( very first contraction to hearing baby cry.) Scary fast. With my second, I had to be induced early, but only lasted about 4 hours total. I didnt have a chance for epidural with either which was fine with me. So, I don't plan on having one with this baby either.
My advice to you is prepare as best as you can to go unmedicated so it's not a huge shock to you when/ if it happens again.
    Edited because autocorrect hates me.
  • Adding to my response above, I remember in childbirth class they have us guidelines on how labor would start 10 minutes between contractions then gradually get closer, more intense, etc.  My labor with both kids never did that. I woke up and BAM, 2 minutes apart, 45 seconds of intense contractions. There was no build up that I could feel. However...I walked around at 4-5 cm for a few weeks before actually going into labor. It's like I skipped the first phase completely.

ETA: (Just realizing the entire thing didn't post!!!) My contractions were one on top of the other, maybe 5-10 seconds in between...so not fun lol

If it makes anyone feel better, my daughter came so quick she "injured" me. I'll leave out gory details as not to scare anyone... Was the short labor nice? Yes. Were the unmedicated delivery and permanent body changes nice? No. Thankfully i have an amazing husband who makes me feel better.

I'm hoping for a different labor story this time around too, which I guess unites us all :) 46 hours of back to back back labor no time in between... No one wants that :)
  • Just because your first one was quick does not mean your second will be.... my first was 2 hours from first contractions / water break to baby out - 2 pushes and he was here.no time for pain meds epidural nothing they didn't even place an iv in me.
My second son was 14 &1/2 hours of horrific labor ,Nubain , an epidural,2 hours of rough pushing and he finally came. So while i wish everyone has quick easy labors or whatever kind of labor they want ,don't count your chickens before they hatch....trust me I learned that lesson so confident my second labor would be easy breezy like my first.

With DS I had 4 contractions in a row with only a few seconds between the next set of 4.  It basically felt like someone was twisting my uterus (which happens to also be when I asked for my epi lol) They had to give me some medication twice to slow down my contractions since he didn't have time to recover between them.

ftr a friend of mine had a super quick labor with her daughter (when she walked into l&d less than an hour after contractions started she was already 8cm dilated, she got into a room and her baby basically popped right out). But she just had another baby last week and she had a 12 hour labor this time!
