Sleeping issues end of first trimester

Hi dear The Bump Forum Members & Fellow September Moms :)

I am expecting our first and I am now 14 weeks. The last weeks/months I been having trouble sleeping. Especially when I go to pee around 4am, because then I can't go to sleep anymore. Although I am so tired.

I have been rather tired during my 1st tri and needed to sleep way longer than normal.

Any of you ladies having the same issues and more importantly: any tips to tackle this?

Thanks for reading and thank you in advance for all your suggestions.

Re: Sleeping issues end of first trimester

  • Hi, I've suffered from insomnia on and off since my first pregnancy in 2006.  Like you, my brain turns on when I get up and I can't fall back asleep.  I think it's pretty common with moms.

Sometimes, getting out of bed and having a small snack, writing in my journal, making a to-do list (to get the thoughts out of my head), and praying help me enough where I can go back to bed.  My husband is super helpful too and will get up with the older kids in the morning if I need another hour after a night of insomnia.  Years ago I was diagnosed with "stress induced insomnia" after doing a sleep study but I have never wanted to take medication for it.  I think some of it is hormonal and I'd rather do more natural things to resolve it.  Sometimes it's even a blessing to have quiet moments to myself and I try to catch a nap later that day (when I put a show on for the kids).  I find exercise helps me sleep better over all and manage stress.  I hope that helps, good luck!

  • I don't have any tips but I will say that for the past few nights, the same thing has been happening to me. During the first tri, I was sleeping like a rock (minus the pee breaks), but could go back to sleep in about 1 second flat. The last couple nights though, I've woken up to pee around 4:30 and then can't get back to sleep for the life of me... I'm hoping this doesn't become a trend!

I had problems with sleep insomnia during my entire pregnancy with my first. It seems to be happening with this one as well. I use a Snoogle, and that helps a little, but for the most part giving birth was the only thing that made it go away for me last time. I also second that I sleep marginally better if I get in some excercise.

ETA: Sometimes I will read or watch a show to try to help my brain start shutting off. This also works sometimes.

  • I have that issue sometimes as well. What kind of helps me is to basically not open my eyes at all and definitely not turn on any light or look at my phone. Basically zombie over to the bathroom, pee and zombie back to bed. A few years ago I was having this same issue (though not pregnant) and I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I started my medication and began sleeping like a baby. Hope this helps and if all else fails, take a nap in the middle of the day!
  • I found a back to sleep meditation podcast that I put on when this happens.  On iTunes it is: meditation oasis: relax into sleep guided meditation. By five minutes in, I'm out.
  • I was an excellent sleeper during the 1st tri and then did some traveling and had a break from work that threw off my "in bed and asleep by 10 and not waking up until 6" routine. Watching some tv before helped, then having a fan on for noise (and because I sleep better when I'm a little cool as opposed to warm.) Also are you exercising? I sleep more soundly when I've taken a 30+ min walk or done prenatal yoga earlier in the day. Good luck!
