Goopy eyes :'(

So little one's right eye started watering and has some green goop. I'm not sure if it's a clogged duct or something else. I tried wiping it with a warm cloth and dabbing with breast milk.

Has as anyone else had this happen? Or have any tips that work? If it doesn't clear up in a couple of days, I'll take her in. I'm hoping it doesn't come to that.

Re: Goopy eyes :'(

  • My LO had a clogged duct that left her eye super goopy/crusty for about a week. Wipe with a warm soft cloth, and massage with your fingertip right at the inner canthus (the edge of the eyelid by the nose) several times a day.

If it spreads to the other eye or the eye itself turns red, it probably needs to be checked for infection.

  • Mine has had goopy eyes since he was born... My doctor told me as long as his whites are white and not red then just massage it and wipe it daily.
  • Yes my lo had this for about 2 weeks.  my pediatrician said they don't do anything for clogged ducts until 8 months at least except the same advice as pp.
  • I read that up to 50% of babies have clogged ducts. I was surprised to see it was that common! 2 of my 3 kids have had it, and it's resolved without treatment (other than what the first PP said to do).

  • Mine did too. It was just for two days though. The second day she woke up from her name with her eye crusted shut. The next it was fine. She still gets an occasional whitish chunk of stuff. Her doctor said it was likely a clogged duct.
  • Mine too. She does better after wiping with warm wash cloth, breastmilk drops, and massage. Her doctor did say to be extremely diligent about washing your hands before you massage so that you don't infect your LO with any germs.

  • Mine had a clogged duct for a couple weeks. I wiped it with a warm cloth, massaged it and put a drop of breast milk in her eye at every diaper change. It was a pain but it cleared up eventually. Pediatrician said it's super common and to just keep doing what I was doing if it happened again.

  • Yep. We had issues with this for about a week. Little dude's eye was even red, but they said not to worry. We cleaned his eye daily multiple times with a cotton ball dipped in warm, sterile water. We were told to wipe from the outer eye to the inner eye.
  • Thank you all for your responses! I'm sure it's a FTM thing but I just have no idea what to go in for and what not. I will try cleaning her eye throughout the day and applying a drop of breast milk.

I just feel feel so bad when I look at her sweet face and her eye looks so damn bad!!  :'(

If you are breastfeeding, be careful to wash hands very well and not let LO's eye come in contact with nipple...my midwife MIL said that eye infections can spread to sore nipples and cause infections in you too.
  • My son had this the first two weeks. It eventually went away. We just kept wiping it with warm water.
  • Both my kids had clogged ducts in one eye. DS went away after two weeks. DD still gets a watery eye and goopy from allergies
  • Yes we just got over this. Lasted for about two weeks. I did a lot of wiping and massaging with a warm washcloth . It sure looked uncomfortable but she wasn't too bothered by it.
Baby #3 due February. Dx with Spina Bifida Myelo  "good things are coming down the road, just don't stop walking"
  • @jellybellybean3 I'm sure it's bothering me more than her. She's not eating, sleeping or cooing any differently. She just looks at me and smiles. Except when I'm wiping her eye... then she tells me just how pissed she is!
