anyone still have their morning coffee?

I read that a small amount of caffeine is OK during pregnancy, just not to go overboard with huge cups of coffee or tea. So I'm thinking I'm safe with a small cup in the morning. Have you all completely given it up?

  • I slowly stopped drinking coffee when we were TTC and don't miss it much. Some days I even have an aversion to coffee, which is SO opposite from before.?
  • i'm having a hard time deciding what to do, I'm a coffee junkie so part of me wants to just give it up all together, but I'm having terrible headaches and I think I might try to just do half-caf until I can wean myself down to all decaf or nothing.
  • My doc said about a cup a day is OK. However, I have cut out my morning cup of coffee - caffiene cosses the barrier to the baby, who metabolizes it very slowly and thus it can effect their developing cells.

Here is an article on the risks - although they aren't certain you may like to know so you can make the choice about wheather to switch to decaf.

  • I never gave up on caffeine during my pregnancy.

  • This is a personal choice for everyone. However I gave it up. I am a coffee/diet coke junkie. I know that a little is okay... but at the same time I just felt if god forbid something happened, I would look back and think "why didn't I just cut out caffeine" Not that it would be the cause, but I would certainly question it.

For that, it wasn't worth it. To me.

  • I love coffee too. . .so I have some half-caf and I have been drinking that, but some days I am have had a small cup of coffee when I'm really tired.

  • A few times a week I'll either have half-decaf, half-regular or a half cup of regular coffee.  For the most part, I cut way down on caffeine while TTC.  Plus with morning sickness, I don't have the same appetite or toleration for it.

Oh lord yes!  12 ounces a day is fine, as long as that is all the caffeine you drink.

Een though things pass the barrier into the baby, they are not metabolized the same way.    Everything in moderation.  I drank a cup a day with my DD and she is totally fine.  Ask you ob if you are concerned.

Some people choose to go in one direction with limiting things, but I have always been about moderation with my last pregnancy as well as this one.

  • I decided to cut it out when I got pregnant. But it doesn't really matter much anyway because the smell of it makes me sick now! It's one of the only constent aversions I have!?

  • I have a cup of decaf every morning. Can't give up the taste. I also get Starbucks decaf if I am out. I had cut caffeine out awhile ago and started drinking decaf everything, even tea. I am not a soda drinker.
  • I drink 2 cups everyother day!

  • I gave coffee up for a while because it made me gag but I never cut caffeine out completely. Its all about moderation. One or two cups of coffee (or any caffeinated beverage) is fine per day, just don't go overboard. I am finally able to tollerate coffee again and I have one cup in the AM and one around 3, oh how I missed my dear friend.
  • I stopped drinking my morning coffee about a month or two before I got pg, but for an unrelated reason - I love coffee, but I just didn't want to be like my dad, who absolutely cannot get started in the mornings without 4 or 5 cups and then has a few more cups throughout the day. I don't really miss it. I'll still have a cup every now and then, but now I'm so used to not having it, that drinking it makes me jittery.
  • I used to be a total coffee junkie. I mean I'd seriously drink a pot a day on the weekends and 3 or 4 cups every other morning. I totally cut it out. I don't think I can do things in moderation. Sometimes I'll take a sip if DH has some, but that's about it.

  • I gave up coffee slowly while TTC and then we get PG on the first try so I kept drinking decar for a while.  After the 5th week I could not stomach it anymore and for a long time it made my stomach feel queasy if I drank it in the morning.  I drink chai tea lattes and an occasional decaf latte, but usually tea.  I did drink a tiny cup on two occasions at the in-laws over the holidays b/c it smelled so good:-).

  • I do, and I just drink a cup or sometimes two of half caf. However, I would definitely go easy on Starbucks coffee because it has way way more caffeine than regular coffee.

  • I was never one to really have a regular cup of coffee in the morning, so it was really easy to give it up altogether.

That's not really true (I used to work there). The kind of coffee the store brews varies every week and while it is often one of the darker blends, you can ask them to dilute it with hot water (which is what it's made with anyway) to make it milder (and have less caffeine per cup). Some stores also brew a milder alternative every day if you really don't want the dark blends. Or there's always the half caf or decaf option.

As for the espresso drinks, if you want larger drinks you can always ask for them with a shot of espresso less, or with half-caf or decaf shots.

The caffeine in a cup of coffee would be better for you - and your baby - than the artificial sugar in your diet coke!

  • I agree, my dr. said a cup in the morning (or whenever) is fine.  I personally am not really drinking it much but it's more b/cause it doesn't sound good.  I used to drink it in the am before work but not anymore.  I figure I am gonna be exhausted no matter what so why even bother??  Once in awhile I will have a white mocha from Starbucks.

Well according to the above website, a tall Starbucks has double the mg of caffeine than a regular cup of drip coffee. But anyway, that's a good tip about having them dilute it!

  • I still have a cup of coffee every morning.
  • Small amounts are ok, but I have given up all caffeine since BFP just to be safe.

  • Yep, one cup in the AM. Later in my pregnancy, I may even drink a softdrink in the faternoon. I did with DS and he's perfect!
  • my doctor said two cups a day are my maximum allowed amount. i've been diluting a lot with milk, so it's actually half a cup of coffee and half milk per serving. i don't drink soda or eat a lot of sweets, so this is pretty much my only boost of the day!?

  • I don't want coffee every morning like I used to before the BFP. ?I probably have a cup in the morning 2 times per week.
  • I would die without my morning cup! It's less than the recommended 200 mg per day so I am fine with that.?

?I worked at Starbucks for 4 yrs...it's a common misconception that the dark roast coffees have the most caffeine. ?In actuality it's the lighter?roast coffees that have the most caffeine, because of the variation in the roasting process. ?When coffee beans are roasted, the process kills the caffeine in the beans over time. ?Dark roast beans are roasted for longer than light roast beans, so more of the caffeine has been eliminated from them. ?Light roast beans have most of the original caffeine found in the beans. ?This also explains the difference in taste and texture - dark roast coffees are often woody, smoky, caramel-y or spicy (less acidity) while light roasts are bright, vibrant, fruity, etc (more acidity). ?

?Sorry to blather on...former Starbucks, Caribou and Dunn Bros Coffee employee and former daily coffee junkie/addict. ?I would have shot the stuff through my veins if I could have. ?Before I got pg I couldnt' do anything without starting the day with a cup of coffee and a cigarette. ?After I got pg, both made me want to barf. ?After giving birth, both still make me want to barf. ?How life changes when you have kids!?

  • Even before I got PG, I had one cup every morning. I still do, but try not to eat any other caffeinated foods like chocolate, tea, soda etc.?
  • After I saw the BFP I just immediately cut out caffeine and surprisingly do not miss it at all. I used to be the biggest Coke drinker and also loved my morning coffee with an occasional decaf later in the day. However, ever since becoming pregnant I do not even like the smell of the stuff. If you drink it in small moderation you and your baby will be fine I'm sure.
  • My doctor said he isn't concerned about a cup of coffee (or two) a day. He did want me to lay off until after 10 weeks though.
  • Given my temperment... my tendency to worry... and the fact that chocolate also has caffeine in it, I've made the decision to cut out black tea and coffee during my pregnancy.  I'm primarily concerned with keeping myself as relaxed as possible for the sake of the baby.

(Prior to pregnancy, I was drinking 2-3 cups of coffee a day.  So I definitely miss it!)

  • I'm trying to cut down on coffee and diet coke, but I haven't cut it out completely.  I probably have coffee 1 or 2 days a week (just one cup, only very rarely have I had two).  I was having diet coke a couple times a week as well, but I haven't had any in a while.

  • I have drank 1 cup every morning for YEARS. ?BUT I started weaning myself off it slowly after I got my BFP at 4 weeks, even though my dr. said 1 cup a day was okay. ?I took about 1.5 weeks weaning myself off it (drank 3/4 cups for a few days, 1/2 cup for a few days and 1/4 cup for a few days) and did not get a headache at all. ?I was planning to take 2 wks to wean off it but I ended up getting morning sickness and didn't even want it anymore. ? ?
