In hospital with my 12 year old son...

he's just found out he's diabetic. I'm absolutely devastated for him. If anyone has me on Instagram you will have seen his picture and seen how bad he looks. He has lost so much weight in just one week it's terrifying. I know diabetes is manageable but just to see your baby so sick and to know he has to inject insulin for the rest of his life is totally breaking my heart. Just wish I could take it away should be me not my baby, don't even know how this will affect the rest of his life, so confused. Hopefully find out a lot more tomorrow from the diabetic team. Thanks anyone who reads this sometimes it's better just to talk hear rather than family that are all too involved

Re: In hospital with my 12 year old son...

  • I'm so sorry! What a burden at such a young age :( I don't really know anything about diabetes but I wish you and him the best. Take comfort knowing that it is manageable and hopefully there are some people with more experience you can reach out to to help you understand and be less confused

  • That's a tough diagnosis for him and you. But it's very manageable and will become easier to handle and there is a large enough population (sadly) that there is a lot of information out there. Support groups too. Hope he starts to feel better real soon.
  • Prayers for you and your DS! I hope he starts feeling better soon.  @Bognes gave great advice about support groups for your family and your son as well.  A friend of mine was diabetic and it just became a part of his daily routine after awhile.  Hopefully your son will come to see it that way as well.
  • I hope your son feels better, ASAP. My teenage cousin found out he had it and has grown into a very responsible young man. It makes you grow up quick, but he still has lots of time to be a boy still! Prayers to him that he find it easy to manage after a while and gets to feeling healthy once again.
  • My niece became diabetic from around the same age. I wouldn't say it has all been sunshine and rainbows; her parents struggled for a bit with her not staying on top of checking her blood sugar and injecting herself when she was going through a rebellious teenager phase. She now has an insulin pump which makes managing it easier.

Besides more frequent doctor visits and being vigilant about diet and medication, her life has not been affected from what I can tell. She's now in her 20s, married, and pregnant with a healthy baby girl.

I'm sorry you are going through this. It will be ok.

  • Poor little guy! ❤️
  • Diabetes is totally managable! I know it seems overwhelming right now but everything will work out.

I know you just found out but you may want to look into getting a trained diabetic companion dog. It could be a way to turn a stressful thing into a good thing. I know a young boy who has a dog trained to be a diabetic support dog and they have the best bond. https://4pawsforability.org/diabetic-alert-dog/

    Hang in there.
  • So sorry to hear about this. That must be really hard on you and your family.

Diabetes is absolutely manageable though! My good friends little sister was diagnosed with diabetes when she was in 3rd grade. She just started college as a D1 volleyball player!
  • I was diagnosed with Type 1 when I was 9 years old. When I was first diagnosed, I was weak and quite sick, but I did come around very quickly. You will feel very overwhelmed to start....it is a scary thing at first....and then there will come a day where you don't even think about it. You just do it. The injections, the testing, the carb counting....it all just becomes second nature. There will be highs and lows (literally and figurativly).

    My advice:
    1) try to relax
    2) Find a friend that can support him. I was always embarassed and tried to hide it...not the way to go
    3) Don't act like the injections are a big thing or he may resist doing them
    4) DO NOT GET FRUSTRATED WHEN HE IS FRUSTRATED. I know it is hard on you, but trust me, it will be harder for him
    5) Cry. Ask for help. Know that you are not alone.

You will get this. I promise. Good luck and please tell your son not to be scared or embarrassed. He will be okay.

  • Thank goodness he is already getting help n getting treated, and it is a manageable illness. What a difficult thing to have to go through!! Be strong for him and stay positive, good luck n god bless
  • Thanks everyone he has took to it so well, I am super proud of him the docs and nurses are all amazed how quick he's just got on with it. @tpete12 thanks for the advice helps a lot luckily enough he knows some ppl from school who's also have type 1 so that will help a lot. Everything isn't so overwhelming now. Get home on Monday so suppose that's when it might get a little overwhelming again when there's no docs and nurses but we will do it, he's an amazing young man pretty proud I'm the one that got to be his parent :)
  • I'm glad to see this update and that things are going well so far!
