May 2016 Moms

32 weeks already dilated 1 cm

Hey ladies!   Just wanted to throw out there that I dropped last week and after my check up im already starting to dilate.  Got a steroid shot and get to go for another tomorrow and start weekly visits early.  No bed rest yet and doctor seemed to think I will still make it to term but maybe not 40 weeks.  Here's to hoping we make it to 38 weeks and I stay a may mom!

Re: 32 weeks already dilated 1 cm

  • Hi there ! I'm sorry your going through this as it is a little stressful, but I'm happy to see someone else in a similar situation to myself! I went into preterm labor at 28 weeks and dilated 1cm and %50 effaced, I also got the steroid shots for baby and some medication to stop contractions. I'm now almost 33 and still only one centimetre !! All my doctors are amazed at how I'm still pregnant but I am! So it is deffinitely possible your LO will stay in there for quite a while more :) make sure to take it easy and rest with you feet up lots! Good luck !!

Did you ask to be checked or what was the reasoning ? I was asking about being checked my last appointment and they were more than willing since I had to get contractions stopped twice in L&D but I told them I would wait until my next appt which is Monday and I will be getting checked to see if I have anything going on as I've been having a lot of odd symptoms these past two weeks.
  • @kwrightnb thanks for your positive story!  I'm sorry you had to go through it as well.  Thankfully I wont be put on bed rest unless I get to 2cm.  Im not looking forward to that as I am really active (work in a hospital, did a 5k 3 weeks ago...walking but still).  I hope you keep your LO baking a few more weeks and will be watching for any updates!

@sparkledonuts (love the name btw) I did not asked to be checked in those words but did mention I had dropped about a week ago and monday had a weird night of menstrual like cramps (which were similar to what I had when i dropped) and (this is disgusting) feeling like a tampon was falling out  for a few hours one night (nothing was of course but that was how it felt).  Thankfully my doctor said "lets just check".  Which made me feel better.  I would rather her be overly cautious especially since I have had no contractions and no bleeding and this is my first pregnancy.
  • I know you are happy to not be restricted on activity, but try to get some rest with your feet up and stay hydrated, at least until 34-35 weeks - try to avoid the nicu!!

I'm 75% effaced but no dilating yet. I'm on bedrest, which is actually causing some tension in my relationship. Try to rest and relax and lets all pray we make it to at least 35 weeks. :) Good luck ladies!
  • I'm dilated 1 cm as of last week. My activities have been restricted but no bed rest yet. Really hoping to avoid that and make it to 37 weeks with the twins!
  • To avoid NICU I have to get to 36 weeks...so 3 weeks and 3 days. Trust me I'm essentially a blob when I get home. My goal is no NICU even though my bff from when I was 6 would be one of my nurses. Thoughts, prayers, and whatever else might work for others in similar boats. We got this ladies!
  • I'm in a similar situation. On Tuesday, I started having cramping/contractions on and off all day long. I called my Ob office to see what. if anything, they wanted me to do. I spoke to a nurse who told me if I'm having consistent cramps/contractions that do not go away I should head over to L&D to get monitored. After another hour of  continuously having the cramps/contractions I did go to L&D. They monitored me for 3 hours and did some bloodwork. They also checked my cervix to see if I was dilating and in fact I'm 1cm dilated. The nurse said that it is normal for STMs to start dilating sooner.
Turns out I was dehydrated. I was sent home with no restrictions and told to increase my liquids!
Definitely a scary situation. Here's hoping for full term babies!

Im so glad to see someone else use this description. I've felt this way before and struggled to get others to understand what I was saying.
    Me: 31 | DH: 33
    DD: 05/14/16
    Baby #2 EDD: 12/23/19
  • With my first I was 90% effaced and 3 cm dilated 3-4 weeks ahead of my due date. When I actually went into labor at 40 + 4 I arrived at the hospital in the same condition despite hours of contractions and immobilizing pain. I had to wait until I dilated to 4 cm before they would officially admit me, which took another two hours or so.
  • This is a pretty extreme example, but my sister just had her second baby in February, and when she was 34 weeks she found out she was 6 cm! We were all preparing ourselves for a preemie and she ended up making it all the way to 39 weeks and a few days. Hopefully you'll have a similar experience.
  • Will you only get checked if you have some symptoms going on... or is there a certain point when they check to see if you're dilated or have effacement (is that grammatically correct!?) Or will all my future appointments be check weight, check blood pressure, hear heart beat - done? LOL ?!? I have no idea what to expect! I am 32 1/2 weeks.

@Kit&cat Many doctors will wait until 36 or even 38 weeks to do a cervical check unless you have possible symptoms of preterm labor or a history of preterm labor. Some are more apt to check than others, and some women never get checked until they're in labor since you can refuse cervical checks.
  • Kit&Cat generally this depends on your doctor.  Your OB may also take into account any symptoms you are experiencing.  For example, many offices begin checking your cervix at 36 weeks, but many offices don't check for dilation/effacement at all.  If you believe that cervical exams pose an unnecessary infection risk, speak up for yourself and decline the check.  Definitely ask at your next appt!

  • Kit&Cat do not fret.  I was only checked because of my bump dropping and having some odd feelings (beyond just heavyess).  Normally they don't check where I go until 36 weeks.
  • Well I am 30w5d and dilation check this morning was 3 cm. I'm in the hospital for observation now. But again, I'm having twins so the normal playbook pretty well goes out the window. But if you're concerned, ask!
  • khochanadel  Good Luck to you!  Hope your twins stay put a while longer.  Did you get steroids yet for lung maturity?  Are you laboring?

  • I got one shot a little while ago, if all goes well I will get another tomorrow before they discharge me.

As far as laboring - I am having contractions but I don't feel them; they just see them on the monitor. Just dilated but have not dilated more.
