Rib pain, but not from kicking?

Anyone else?

It's a muscular pain right in the solar plexus area, and it always hurts. Like burning. It does seem to get worse after I exert myself...

A nurse friend said it was my rib bones softening and moving for baby, and there's nothing to be done about it:( Of course, I asked my friend only after both my nurse and my NP shrugged at it and said, "that's odd." Without giving me any indication that this was a thing.

I've never seen this listed as a symptom--has anyone else had this?

Re: Rib pain, but not from kicking?

  • I've been having rib pain on my right side, too. It doesn't always hurt though and I wouldn't describe it as burning, I have sharp pains at times but when I'm just sitting still it is a dull ache. It is the most painful when I rotate my torso and is very sensitive to the touch. I mentioned it to my OB yesterday and there is a name for it that I can't remember. She suggested that a more supportive bra could help as the weight of my bump and boobs is partially to blame, that and the softening and shifting of my rib cage as the diaphragm moves up into it. I'm already wearing a ridiculously supportive bra. Seems like the only real solution is giving birth. Isn't the third trimester fun?

  • I had his horrible pain with DS1 and again with this LO. It sucks big time. I find it worse at end of day. The only advice I have is to get on all 4s and gently rock. If you have a yoga ball even better. Also baths really helped me and icing it for 10-15 minutes.
  • I had that with DD, and it was just godawful. Made me cry. It's your rib cage stretching to accommodate baby. If it's any consolation, I've had zero of that pain this time. Everything is already nice and supple, and baby is riding lower this time. I feel stretching pains as burning too. My chiropractor challenges my pelvic ligaments and it feels like fire! You might find some relief doing child's pose, which gives the baby more vertical space while gently closing your rib cage back together.
  • I have it, left side, and yes, it's definitely a BURNING pain. some days are worse than others. laying on that side in bed aggravates it for sure. at my last apt my ob said "running out of room! as I'm sure your ribs are telling you" ... please baby... drop a bit...
  • Do you possibly have gallstones?

Apparently my mom's gallbladder issues flared up in late pregnancy for her. It was fine -- she did need it removed years later -- but she had this pain too and said it was exactly like what her gallbladder pain was later.

Your BP and urine have all been OK?

  • I've had some burning pain in that area,
and was assuming it might be from the underwire of my bra pressing down since that's where it is. Honestly, I'm not thinking too much about any specific pain I have because I hurt everywhere. I guess I figure if it's contractions, I'll probably know, and anything else is probably normal >.<

  • I have it too. The burning is excruciating. When I'm not at work I try to lie down as much as I can and that is the only thing that brings me relief...oh and taking off my bra. The underwire seems to aggravate it for sure!

BP and urine fine: it definitely feels muscular rather than internal. But I guess ribs aren't muscles, either...
  • I've had this with all 3 pregnancies. My
forst daughter stretched tore nerve endings, so I've been told it's similar
to a shingles type pain. Anyway, it goes away after delivery and only recurs in my pregnancies. At times it is debilitating
