TDaP - I had an allergic reaction when I was an infant - need advice!

When I was around 4 months old I had the second round of  TDaP vac done and I experienced a fever and vomiting. The next time I went  in the left out the Pertussis bit. I  told my Dr. and she recommended me not to get it now and that I probably should not receive it after baby is born either. This just makes me nervous as I know Pertussis can be deadly in infants and I don't want to do anything to really harm my baby. Did anybody else go through something like this? What did you end up doing? Was baby okay? I need some advice, or  some solace :(

  • wow - I had the same experience with the Tdap as a child. Except it was the first shot, and I had a seizure. Since then I did the T and D boosters separate. My OB also said not to risk it with the shot. I'm asking everyone who plans to come to the house within the first 2 months to get the whooping cough booster. If they don't want to, tough luck. I don't plan to be going out much the first two months so I plan to isolate myself to my and my family's house. I think this is about all I can do.

Good advice. It really is all you can do. You have to physically protect your baby. You can only do so much!
  • I agree with PP's advice. Also, when you need to take LO to the pediatrician for initial checkups, request the first appointment of the day.
  • I don't know if this helps or not but I also had a reaction when I was an infant, just a fever though. My doctor basically said it doesn't sound like much of a risk...so I got it anyway (this past Friday). No reaction, just a sore arm.

DD has gotten a fever after getting a vaccine before. I don't think fever and vomiting are signs of a true allergic reaction since they're listed as normal possible side effects. So, like @zasinger, you would probably be fine to get it now but I would probably just stick to my doctor's advice.
  • My SO had a significant reaction to the TDaP as an infant and has perminant but minor nerve damage that causes a slight tremor in his hands. I was incredibly concerned about if my son should have the shot and if I should get it while pregnant fearing that the reaction could be genetic somehow. My SO has two younger brothers who were never vaccinated against pertussis as a percaution due to my SO's reaction. Honestly it scares me more knowing that three people who are close to my LO could potentially bring whooping cough around him, than the possibility of a reaction. I also work at a hospital and asked pretty much everyone I know there what they thought and was advised to get the shot anyways, and to ask for monitoring after LO gets his pertussis shot to watch for reaction.  I plan to basically keep everyone away from our lil family until LO has his shots.
  • Go see an allergist

  • There are more ways than just vaccines to keep your LO safe, physical strategies as already mentioned but also keeping you and LO as healthy as possible- get plenty of rest, good nutrition, boost your immune system w/probiotics, vitamins, breastfeeding etc
  • A true allergic reaction would be redness and swelling at the site, rash, itching, tongue or throat swelling, or any trouble breathing. Fever is your body's natural reaction to creating antibodies and the vomiting may or may not have been related. Obviously advice from a doctor is best but our bodies change. That's how you develope allergies later in life that you didn't have as a child.

I got the tdap shot done last week and had a rash for 3 days in my face with itching and swelling. Def was a allergic reaction and will most likely never get this shot again as it was horrible and wanted to rip my face off as well as making sure throughout the day my throat wouldn't swell up.
