Baby wont burp!

hay lovely mummas, hoping you guys have some advice. DD is 3 weeks old and she will not burp! I know she gets wind becuase she is unsettled in sleep and farts like crazy but i have tried every technique under the sun, and 9 times out of 10, will not get one burp out. Anyone got tips or tricks?

Re: Baby wont burp!

  • No tips or tricks here just wanted to say I'm a FTM to a 10 day old boy and only his father can get him to burp with ease. Dreading when he goes back to work this weekend.

  • Some of my kids just haven't been big burpers.  Especially if they are breastfed. I'm not sure your baby farting is a direct result of her not breing burped well enough.  Some babies just tend to struggle more with tummy troubles than others. If you are formula feeding you could always experiment with different types of formula or bottles.

  • DD wasn't a big burper either unless you REALLY pounded on her back which I was usually too wimpy to do. A lot of BF babies don't take in as much air so they don't burp. I wouldn't correlate the farting - their tummies are SO tiny they pretty much poop every time they eat at this stage.
  • How long are you trying to burp for? If I didn't work in childcare I wouldn't know that it can be 10 minutes of patting to get a burp out-or how hard you can actually have to press to help some babies out. I'm still waiting on my own LO but some babies really do burp easier than others, some need to be burped half way trough a feeding, some at the end-if the gas is coming out (either end) it's coming out. If it seems to really be bothering her bring it up to her doctor-they may have a technique that you haven't tried yet.

My little one takes a while. Sometimes it helps if I lay her back then bring her back up over my chest... Or even lay her down a few minutes first. I can spend a good 5-8 min patting her back too... Along with rubbing in circular motion or laying her on her side and doing this too. She has tummy issues with gas, so I try to make sure the burping happens. She almost always has a large couple burps at the end
  • You could try laying her belt down on your knee and patting. There's also the "bicycle" method of laying her on your back in your lap and rotating her legs a like she's pedaling an imaginary bicycle. If all else fails...she might just not need to burp! Her gas might be more than happy coming out the other end :). As PP said, if she's BF she might not burp as much as FF babies do.

  • With DD, it worked better if I sit her up on my thigh, use one hand to hold up her chin and one hnd on her back, then I do a gentle circular motion with her upper body. i do that for about a min or two, then pat her back for another min or two, repeat. Sometimes it could take up to 15-20 mins to get anything out. It is especially hard to do during the MOTN feed because all I wanted to do was go back to bed. Good luck!

Thanks guys i have tried all these things! I wondered if she just wasnt a burper, but she is not sleeping well at night, and i can hear her lying in her bed trying to bring it up, and is quite disturbed. she is breastfed but she also shows classic wind symptoms, just wont burp! Arrrrg. I looked up using a product like gripewater or infacol, but studies show they dont have any higher success rate then the placebos!  I resigning to the next 3 months of no sleep until her digestive system matures?
  • Well... it's really not uncommon for most breastfed babies not to be major burpers.... afterall.... the breast is a closed system..   meaning air is NOT in your breast.
What u may hear her doing at night is getting hungry. Hunger signs and tummy ache are much the same at this age.
"Getting wind" isn't just a burp. Is she peeing and pooping? Does she have a paci? Is she swaddled? Does she sleep on an incline?

Chances are this is 100% normal
  • Thanks @MamaRoni there is so much to think about! I didnt consider that it might be hunger causing the restless sleep!  Pee and poop are all normal, ive tried her on an incline but no difference and she doesnt like a pacifier. Spits it out after a few seconds : (
  • Does she spit up a lot?  Does she sound congested?  Just a couple questions because my ds3 had a lot of the similar symptoms and was a terrible sleeper and he ended up having reflux.  It's not something they would diagnose yet but you might want to keep it on your radar.

  • She spits up occasionally, maybe once every few days? And she is definitely a little congested. I did wonder if the has minor reflux, its only seems to bother her at night though
  • My parents showed me how to burp my baby & it's worked really well.  Start at the bottom of her spine & work your way up her back. (It will work the bubbles upward)
  • My son is a difficult burper.  I've been changing his diaper mid bottle to get him good and mad.  He usually burps after that!

It might be just a coincidence but I switched baby from Similac to Up and Up Advantage.  I also gave him a few 3 oz bottles last night.  Burping much better now!  I burped him after every oz and no gripes (mom win!)

  • I just had to put my two cents in after DS's check up yesterday. He wouldn't burp either. He also spit up, but it did't bother him(DS is breast fed). The doctor told me to sit him up right for 15-20 minutes and a burp will come on it's own. It sounds strange, but it seems to work.
  • Thanks for the advice ladies! Strangely enough, we have started giving her EBM in a bottle 2x daily and i was really worried about wind due to burping issues but we have been able to get bottle burps out really easy (the LC said maybe becuase bottles produce bigger air bubbles?) and now she seems to be able to burp herself on the breast while she feeds!! So i still try and burp her after every breastfeed but if i dont get anything after a few minutes i stop. She sometimes randomly burps on her own 15-20 mins later.

Another thing to try that's working for us is to put LO in a baby carrier (keeping them upright) like a ring sling... The vertical position works great to get burps out of my little guy.
