Baby bedtimes

My little one will be 10 weeks Thursday. While I know under 3 months its not really possible to get them in a daily nap/sleep routine but I'm curious as to what time your babies go to bed and what age. Mine goes between 9&10. And id like to get her down to 8 by 3 months. My cousins 8 month sleeps from 6-6 and i cant wait for the day!!

Re: Baby bedtimes

  • We try to put DS2 down around the same time as we start bedtime for DS1 which is around 8-9 pm. My first son never slept 12 hours like that. Probably because when I'm working we don't all even get home till after six and don't usually eat dinner till almost 7. Then we are back up by 6 am the following morning to get ready for work and daycare. DS2 is pretty consistent with sleeping 3 hours then waking up to eat and then going back down for another 5-6 hours between midnight and six am. Hoping to eliminate that midnight feeding eventually but I think we were stuck with it with DS1 for several months after I wine back to work last time.

  • Right now my LO goes to bed around 8:00 then wakes up around 10 or 11 then is out till 6:30 or 7:00. He weaned himself is of the MOTN feeding around 6 weeks. We are working to wean the 10/11feeding slowly decreasing it half an oz at a time at 10 weeks. Our goal is to be on a 7-7 schedule as it works out best for our schedules. Our pediatrician said to choice a time between 6-7 and stick with it he said it was goal to be on the 12 hour time frame by our 4 month apt.

  • LO will be 12 weeks old on Thursday. We start the nighttime routine at 8:30. I bathe her, and DH gets her diapered and dressed. Then, I swaddle her and feed her. I try to keep her on the breast for as long as possible right before bed, and by 9:15, I'm rocking her to sleep. She's usually out by 9:30, and then I transfer her to her bassinet. She'll stir a bit, but usually stays asleep. Lately she's been sleeping in 6 hour stretches (which has been amazing, and is hopefully not a fluke!). She's been on this schedule since she was about 7 weeks old, and it doesn't vary much!
  • DS in 12 weeks today. We start our bedtime routine around 8:30. He'll nurse and fall asleep, but will wake up as soon as we lie him down in the RnP. I still put him down with the hopes that one day he'll just stay asleep, but so far it's been a no-go. When he wakes, I pick him up and rock him back to sleep, then let him sleep on me. He wakes around 10-11 to eat again, then he goes down in the RnP and sleeps anywhere from 4-7 hours. I was trying hard to get him down for the night successfully the first time before going back to work, but I guess he really wants the cuddle time!

  • DS is 9 weeks and I start the bedtime routine around 7:30.  He will fall asleep while nursing and I'll put him down between 8:30 and 9
  • Right now my 10 week old goes down between 8-9 and sleeps until 5 or 6, sometimes only until 4.
  • We usually get LO to sleep in the 7:30 to 9 pm range, depending on the day, but usually by 8:00. I try to just follow her cues of when she is getting fussy to start bedtime routine. She goes down for about 5-6 hours and wakes up to nurse, then goes back to sleep for a few more hours before eating again and us getting out the door. She's 11 weeks today and has been on this pattern since sometime in week 7. I just started back to work full time this week so fingers crossed bedtime doesn't get too messed up!
  • 8PM would be ideal for me too. No matter how early I start the routine, LO ends up falling asleep around 10 and then is up every 3-4 hours to nurse. It's better than 2AM which is when she used to go to sleep. I'll slowly try to get it to be earlier though.
  • My LO is usually fighting to stay awake around 5:30 or so. So we've started her routine at 5 and she's usually asleep by 6pm or shortly after and sleeps right until 6am. Sometimes she'll stir a bit in the night but a quick belly or cheek rub and the sleep sheep on again and she's out. She's got a cold right now so I'm in and out a lot more frequently but considering she's sick she's still a bedtime rockstar.

    Hope I haven't jinxed it !!

  • LO goes down between 8:30-9:30 depending on the night. I feed him and he goes right down. Then he will wake up around 1-2, 3 if we are lucky. Then he goes back down until 6-7. For now I'm ok with this, but would love for him to have a bit of an earlier bedtime. He has started taking a longer nap in the early evening, so I may start putting him in his crib around 6 for this long nap. I'm hoping it will allow him to sleep until around 9-10 when I feed him again right before bed.
  • DS is 15w. He goes down to sleep anywhere between 7:30-8:30. It just depends on when that last feeding before that time is. He will usually sleep until 12:30-1:00 and need another bottle. We give him 1oz less than what we normally do and will be slowly decreasing that amount to ween him off of that feeding. After that bottle he goes back down usually until 6:30-7:30.

We have have gotten a few fluke instances where he's slept from 6pm-1-2 am and will then still go back down for another 4-5 hour stretch. Yesterday he was out at 4:15, and slept until 12:10 this morning. He only had napped about 1 hour and 30 minutes all day for my mom, so we knew he was exhausted.
  • We start putting LO down at 8. She usually is asleep by 9 but wakes up around 10 when.DH and I go to bed. She usually sleeps 4 hrs is up nurses and sleeps another 4 hrs. She usually sleeps in her bassinet but this week she doesn't seem to want anything to do with it and I end up bringing her to bed with us. I hope it passes because I go back to work next week
  • We average right around 9, who is 11 weeks today. If she stays up to that point, she's usually good to sleep until almost 5. She will occasionally snooze on us before that, but she's still sleeping a lot of the day anyway. Since I work until 5, and often don't get home until 6, if I started putting her to bed at 7, I would never get to spend time with her.
  • 9 weeks and DS goes to sleep between 6:30-7:30 most nights. He usually sleeps until 11/12 before first feeding but after that its about every 2-3 hours. We are hopeful that longer stretches of sleep come soon.

We do the same! My husband gives my 2 year old a bath and puts him to bed while I put the baby to bed. We usually start the routine at 7 (a little earlier if he's really tired). He is usually up once or twice before 9pm and we have to settle him back to sleep, but that gives us a little time to straighten up or watch tv.
  • Glad to hear someone else has a early bed time! DH and I get up around 5-5:30am for work and we would have no time alone together otherwise!
  • Currently the last bottle is around 7:30pm and he's asleep around 8pm. It took us a while to get here after the time change happened though!
  • He is 12 wo and goes to bed around 830 and sleeps until 630 or 7 with only the occasional 430 wake up feeding. It works out well though because I would rather wake up an hour early instead of in the night and my husband would rather wake up in the middle of the night instead of early, so that's how we handle LO.
  • Everyone who has early bed times and long sleeps. Do you feed your LO more often during the day or just when he/she is hungry? My LO eats every 4 hours but should I feed her every 3/3.5?
  • #jealous

The baby has no set bedtime. No matter what we do, she's easily up until midnight or later. My son was the same way, but now easily goes to bed between 8 and 9, sleeps anywhere between 12 and 14 hours straight without waking, and usually (excluding this week) takes a nap anywhere from 1-3 hours long during the day... I so hope the baby jumps on that band wagon soon!
  • My daughter used to be up anywhere from 11-2am, but for the last couple weeks I've made a point of getting her into a night diaper around 8 and in the bed at 8:30. I nurse her in bed until she falls asleep, then I get up and go about my business. I'm able to dream feed her until between 7:30-9am.

    I personally feed on demand.

  • @BarrettJ89  My LO is the same. We'll put her down (after a pretty consistent bedtime routine) around 7-8 but she wakes by 11 to eat and then won't go back down until anywhere between 2-5 am. The 5 is rare but it happens. She gets regular eat-play-sleep cycles through the day. I'm hoping she'll adjust eventually.

I just read in Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child that babies my son's age (8 weeks) are often ready for bed at 6-8. I was skeptical, but we've been putting him down around 7 the past couple of nights, and he conks right out. The first night I did a dream feed at about 10 and he slept until 6 am! Last night he was sleeping so deeply when I went to bed that the dream feed didn't work, and he woke up at 12, 4, and 7. It was so incredibly nice to be able to eat dinner peacefully with my husband and then sit and read on the couch without anyone having to soothe a fussy kiddo.
  • @klbh I am about 35% of the way through that book but I find it SO repetitive and so frequently geared toward colicky babies that I'm kind of stuck. Is it worth finishing? Were there any sections that were particularly helpful to you or really get into detail about his recommendations? I'm reading on my Kindle so skimming is a little more challenging.

Oh my god, it is so long and disorganized! I have just been looking up sections in the TOC. The only part that really seems to apply to young babies in particular is chapter 5. My main takeaways are:

Under three months you shouldn't attempt any "sleep training" but just follow baby's cues, and expect a couple of night wakings.

After six weeks most babies are ready for an earlier bedtime. Look for signs of drowsiness between six and eight pm.

Regular naps during the day are crucial; most babies can't be awake for more than about two hours at a stretch. Look for early signs of drowsiness and try to put baby down before she gets overtired.

Its okay either to put a baby down drowsy or awake or to soothe into a deep sleep before putting her down, but be consistent.

Expect regular naps to develop around four or five months, after regular nighttime sleep is established.

Sleep in a quiet, stationary environment (as opposed to a stroller or car) is of higher quality. Again, this matters more after four or five months.

  • @klbh thank you! You've spared me some serious frustration :)
  • 8 would be ideal but she doesn't fall into a deep night time sleep until about 10-11. Then wakes up at between 4-6 then usually sleeps again until between 7-9.

Mines the same. Do you find that she eats more frequently through the day when she sleeps like that? Mine used to go 4 hrs between feedings but now that she sleeps more at night she eats more like 2.5-3.5 hrs.

I was worried about this as well I had a dr apt with his pedi today and I told him he is currently eating 5-6oz bottles 4 times during the day. Usually totaling 22-24oz/day and sleeping from around 7/8 till 6/7 (my son is 11 weeks and just over 12lbs) and he said that's just fine. And to trust my baby if he wants/needs more he will let me know.

Omg this is literally almost the exact same for us. She starts fussing & fighting sleep around 7pm. She's usually sleep between 7:30 - 8:30pm. She wakes up around 2:00 am to breastfeed then around 5:00 am to breastfeed again. Then she's up for the day around 7:30/8am and she feeds again. She's 11 weeks today. She used to go to bed at 10 or 11pm but over time she settled into this current schedule on her own about a month ago, it happened naturally. The only rough part is sometimes she likes to nurse/pacify for 45 mins to an hour & I just want us both to go back to sleep. Other times nursing only takes 15 mins, it just depends.
  • We've got a good sleeper.

She is put down around 6:30 and usually puts her self to sleep by 6:40. She sleeps through the night, and wakes up at 6:00 AM, because I have to feed her before work. We are still swaddling though.
