Short LP = Poor Egg Quality??

Hey everyone,

I have a short LP, about 9 or 10 days. I also ovulate pretty late-- around day 19 or 20, so basically until I started charting I thought my cycle was totally normal (bc it's like 28 or 29 days).

This might sound like a strange question but I was recently told by a friend going through similar treatments, that her RE believes short LP is most likely caused by poor egg quality. She has no other information to go on other than the 9 or 10 day LP. Her RE basically told her not to bother with progesterone, as it will only "mask" the symptoms, not get to the heart of the issue. She said they should skip IUI and go straight to IVF! The idea, I guess, is that if you don't get a good quality egg, it won't result in a good quality corpus luteum-- and so the poor quality of the corpus luteum won't produce enough hormones to sustain the lining for the full 2 weeks.

I have had FSH and AMH tested, which are pretty much in normal range-- but that just tests for quantity right? Not quality?

Has anyone ever heard this as being the most probable explanation for LP defect? I have my first IUI coming up in 2 weeks and am now worried that I'll have no chance if the quality of my eggs is poor.

Thanks for reading. xx

Re: Short LP = Poor Egg Quality??

  • I hadn't heard this before personally. I had an 11 day LP and can also have delayed ovulation, but after adding in some "support" with acupuncture and healthy diet, I now (years later) lengthened my LP to 13 and ovulation seems a bit more consistent.... (I have endo, so the correlation may be different). That being said, we did opt to skip IUI. It was a personal decision based on our "unexplained" diagnosis, so not something I think is right for everyone..

Do you take anything to support egg quality like CoQ10, Ubiquinol or Resveratrol?

I'm not sure on your history or what you are integrating into your cycle, but those are things I'd definitely recommend for next time if possible...

I hope this cycle is successful for you, I'm sending positive vibes... keep positive if you can! You have a few weeks yet but fx4u.

  • I haven't heard this before. My LP is short as well. My RE thinks (based on my other symptoms) that I don't have a "strong enough" ovulation but said nothing about egg quality. I just finished reading "It starts with the Egg" which is a pretty good book about improving egg quality. If you are concerned about egg quality I would highly recommend checking it out.

@oxinfree,  I don't take any of those meds as of now, but I have another consult with my RE on Friday so I plan on asking her about all of this. Thank you so much
