I would wait until they can roll over minimum. Honestly though, most babies don't develop attachments to a lovey until they are at least a year. It's more of an emotional developmental stage than physical cuddly issue.
Leo loves his a&a lovey! I don't feel comfortable having him sleep with it yet but he plays with it during the day. I set it in the carseat with him and he always grabs it. So cute! Please ignore his goofy hat that is falling off.
I know this discussion died but I have to add to it. I gave up with DD. It isn't just her thumb I've given in on now but she absolutely will not sleep without one of two security blankets. I tried to make sure they're small and light enough to be breathable. She really latched on to the milk barn mini lovey blankets and as soon as she has one and feels it against her cheek her whole little body relaxes. So we're letting her keep it rather than how we initially took it away in the crib. She'll be 18 weeks wednesday and is rolling over well.
I do feel better about it than the big fuzzy ones DS's latched onto around the same age. He's 17 months and still has to sleep with the same blankets (there are five in rotation plus one in the car between gifts and they were super cheap). They did he get him to finally sleep through the night though so I'm all for loveys and security blankets if they work.
As a FTM with DD, I didn't want her getting attached to a lovey and using it as a crutch to sleep. Then the universe turned on me. A friend gave me a lovey for my baby shower but always kept it in DD's drawer out of her sight. One day when she was about 15 months or so, she found it and haven't looked back since. She needs it for her nap and night sleep. I ended up buying 6 spares in case we lose one.
Anyway, to answer your question, I would introduce one when her motor skills allow her to move it freely around.
