Longer name for Ella?

I like the name Ella, and my husband likes it but would prefer it as a nickname for a longer name. Elizabeth is totally out of the running and Eleanor would work but we both think it sounds clunky with our last name. We tossed around Gabriella, but I don't love it. What do you think of Ella, alone? If that's no good, what are some names Ella would feel like a natural shortened form of? Thanks!

Re: Longer name for Ella?

  • I think Ella is fine as a stand alone name.

  • Ella can be used as a stand alone,  but I personally don't like it.  Its pretty but lacks substance in my opinion.

Names it could be used as a nn for
    Arabella
    Adele
    Annabelle
    Aurelia
    Camilla
    Carmella
    Donatella
    Elaine
    Estelle
    Fiorella
    Isabella
    Stella

  • Mariella came to mind first
  • Maybe Eloise? I like it alone though, too. I have an Elle so clearly I enjoy short names

  • Can't help but giggle at the suggestion of Donatella. The teenage mutant ninja turtle jokes would be awful. Ella is ok as a standalone name but as PP said, it kind of lacks substance. Mariella and Arabella are both fantastic suggestions.

  • I actually love Ella as a standalone name and prefer it to Elizabeth, Eleanor.

    I do love Eloise too

  • I think Ella as a standalone works!
  • Emmanuelle

  • I know 3 little Ella's right now. I think it's a perfectly fine stand alone name.  It's becoming extremely popular in my area.  My suggestion would be Estella or Isabella.

  • Aw, I agree with PP...I really like Mariella.
  • I think Ella is a great stand alone name.
  • I would definitely use Ella as a nn for something else (or just don't use it at all). It's SO popular right now I'm beyond over it.

    Elianna
I was going to say this. My neighbors little girl's name is Elianna (Anna pronounced like the Disney frozen character)

  • Daniella would be my go to, since I love the name but can't stand "Dani".

Ella is a legit name on its own. I like the Daniella suggestion.

  • My daughter wants her baby sister to call her Ella.  Her name is Eloise.  We get so many compliments on this name.
  • Ella is fine on its own. If you want it to be a nickname, I think Eloise is a really pretty name.
  • My SIL named her daughter Elouise. And I call her Ella.
  • Ella is good but too popular IMO.

  • Thanks for the ideas! I didn't realize Ella was so popular. Eloise might be alright, though it doesn't flow as well with our last name. Our other top choices right now are Amelia (and we thought that would be too popular) and Leah. Maybe we should just go with Leah.

  • Yes, Ella is crazy popular and almost impossible to track since so many Ellas have a different given name.

I know Ellas who are named:
    Ellen
    Eleanor
    Noelle
    Elle
