Brand and type of bottle?

Having trouble deciding which type of bottle is best. I thought I had this all worked out and then my husband threw me for a loop! I had planned on using Avent bottles - I will be staying at home so will have a lot of ability to breastfeed vs pumping, but I will have the Medela pump for when I need/want to pump and was going to get the Avent conversion kit so I can pump straight from the Medela pump to Avent bottles. I liked Avent honestly because they are familiar - they're popular, I've seen a lot of people use them, research says they're safe and a good product... it just seemed like an easy choice.

My husband and I went to a "Heading Home with Baby" class last weekend and one of the items they had was a tilt bottle with what looked like a bottom that drops out?? My husband thought it was the coolest thing ever - not just the tilt but I think he likes the idea of the bottom screwing off because it seems easier to clean. What research have you guys done on these types of bottles and what are your thoughts? Have you made a bottle choice yet, and if so, what are you going with and why?

Thanks for the help ladies! Hope everyone is having a FABULOUS #twt ;-)

I am going with the Lifefactory bottles.  They are a little on the expensive side, but I like that they are glass (daycare approved) with a silicone protective sleeve.  They are dishwasher and microwave safe and have sippy cup caps for easy conversion. Lifefactory baby bottles (not water bottles) are made with a special glass that can go from the freezer to a boiling pot safely.  Since they're glass, they are a little on the heavy side, but I chalk that up to durability.

Hopefully my baby likes these!  I have a fair amount of them, but also have quite a few Avent bottles that I've received as freebies.

  • I've registered for Avent, Dr. Brown, and Evenflo glass bottles. I'm not sure which she'll end up taking to, but I know I want glass.

  • We are starting with nuks when we go to bottles. They were the only ones my son would take to because he had such a strong suck he would collapse the other nipples. Babies all have their preference so I wouldn't invest a ton into a particular bottle/brand until you're sure the baby will like it.
  • I had to use Dr. Brown's with my son because he was a spit-up factory, but they were a pain to clean because of all the parts. I'm going to try the Munchkin Latch this time, hope new baby will like it. I'm only getting one to start.

  • Hoping our baby likes Avent, but we are just buying one of a few different brands to test before buying any, because most babies are so picky.
  • Both my other kids used Avent, which came free in most of the registry bags I got, so I'm hoping those work. If not, we will see what type baby likes.
  • It all depends on the baby about which bottle they will take. I used platex with the drop ins with DD1 but DD2 refused them and would only use MAMs after trying about 6 different types for a while before I got her on avent. My rule is that less parts = easier (less to clean and keep track of). The MAMs had 5 parts vs the 3 for avent and seems to take longer overall to clean up. Just get a bottle and nipple brush and cleaning bottles with bottoms is easy. Also if you are going to use breastmilk, getting a soap made specifically for breastmilk can be a lifesaver (I know medela makes it). With just using dawn, I noticed that sometimes there would still be a film on the bottles afterwards.
  • I've registered for the Avent glass bottles and the Joovy boob glass bottles.
I've seen stainless steel bottles also that were a decent size but hard to find.

  • I got the Kiinde bottles. DS had doctor brown, avent, and Playtex and honestly it was a pain in the butt to wash and sort all the parts every night. The Kiinde bottles just pop a disposable bag into a nipple and hard shell. Trash/recycle the bag, wash the nipple, and you're done. Less work is always better when they're tiny imo. I also really like that I can pump directly into the bags and store them in the freezer until I need them. Plus, when she gets older the bags can double as food pouches. They sell a spoon attachment to put on the end or just the open spout like most pouches.

  • We used Avent with my DD and she did fine with them. I did trash a lot of the bottles but do have some of the smaller size that I kept. We're going to try Dr. Brown's this time because so many of my friends with boys have had gas issues that were somewhat relieved with Dr. Brown's bottles. I'm not really looking forward to cleaning them since there are so many parts, but if it will help with gas, I'm all for it! Will always have the Avent as a fall back if he doesn't like the Dr. B.

  • We used medela, tommee tippee, and Dr. Brown's. DD was fine with any bottle we used, but she started having gas problems so we started on the Dr. Brown's. They are a pain to clean but they helped her a lot.
  • FTM so no experience but I registered for and received Tommee Tippee and Comotomo bottles.

  • FTM so no experience, but our Lactation class instructor recommended either Dr Browns or Munchkin Latch bottles if you're going to go between breast and bottle (they have nipples that more closely resemble actual human nipples), and we're going with the Latch ones since they also have a control flow at the bottom (a little silicon bit that's removable, with a slit in it that controls air flow to make baby work for that milk)

  • Here's a thread from ages ago where we talked about what bottles everyone likes and how to mesh breast and bottle feeding: https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/comment/88437393#Comment_88437393

If you don't care to scroll through that whole thread, this is what I said; it applies here too:
So here's the important thing about picking bottles to use in addition to breastfeeding. Whatever bottle type your little one likes, use the slowest flow possible, preemie nipples preferable, and use the paced bottle feeding method. So many babies wean prematurely from the breast because they develop a bottle preference because it takes zero effort to pull milk from a bottle, but babies have to do some work to get milk from mom. For this same reason babies start to take enormous amounts of breastmilk at one time, which eventually mom struggles to keep up with. I'm extremely active in my la Leche league, pursuing leadership, and see this chain of events all the time and see the stress it creates for mom trying and struggling to keep up with her baby who is being overfed because of lack of knowledge about bottle feeding a breastfed baby. Slow flow nipples and paced bottle feeding are way more important than the type of bottle!

Here's a fantastic document for learning how to do paced feedings
And here's a great video demonstrating paced feeds

I got the kiinde bottles too, as well as a few free avent & dr browns. Im hoping he likes kiinde for the reasons you mention
  • My first only ever took avent bottles but I hear every baby is different. This time around we have a bunch of comotomo bottles and Tommie tippees gifted to us so hopefully the babies will take those
