It's a boy! Opinions wanted!

Hi everyone!

I am due with my first child, a baby boy, due August 11th. We have a pretty good list of names, but one unique option that holds special meaning. Please let me know what you think about the name Riggins (Riggs for short). I really like it but worry it may be too unusual. Thanks!!

  • Loading the player...
  • It's cute, and if you and your SO love it, delete this and don't listen to whatever anyone else thinks! Once folks know the person connected to them name, they'll get used to it, even if it wouldn't be something they'd like otherwise.
  • Hi! Riggins, Idaho is a beautiful town my husband was stationed near in the Air Force, and I randomly thought if it as a name. He loves it, I'm not sure because I tend to be more traditional. Neither of us knew Riggins was a movie or TV character, but have learned now about FNLs and Lethal Weapon :-)
  • Friend of mine named her son Rigby Quinn and calls him Rigs for short. :)
  • Not my style but if a name holds meaning then don't worry about what other people think.

  • If you like it and your husband go for it!
Everyone will have an opinion on names, I've noticed. (As the saying goes opinions are like a***oles, everyone has one.) So just make sure it's something you all like and something you would or DH be ok with if it were your name.

  • Riggs for short is cute and I agree with what everyone posted about using the name despite what people think, especially if it holds a special meaning for you and hubby.

  • I tend towards more traditional names, but that's just my personal style.  Have you considered using it as a middle name? I'm due 2 days before you and also having a boy- boys names are so hard!
  • Personally, I love the name! Riggs is a family name on my mom's side. My grandmothers maiden name. I say go for it. No one else gets to have an opinion on what you name your children.
  • I agree... We had tons of girl named picked out that we both love, but only a few boy names that we both like. What's on your list?
  • I like it especially if it has meaning

  • I think it would make a great middle name
  • I looooove Riggins from FNL so I say yes.
  • We like Nixon for a boy and are getting tons of negativity about it because of the president long ago. Like other pp's have said...if you love it, it doesn't matter what everyone else thinks. I got to the point where I told dh we could not name a baby boy Nixon due to all of the comments. He told me to ignore everyone and if we love it we can use it.
  • I love the name Nixon... It was on my list, but it's not DHs favorite. I say go for it
  • I think it's a cute name. I also think if you both like it, go with it, especially if it has a special meaning to you!

We have chosen not to share names with anyone. Several family members have asked us on numerous occasions if we've thought about names and we usually respond with something like - "Not really". I really don't want their opinions. My sister even said - "Well, if it's a girl, don't name it Amelia, I'm so tired of hearing that name". 1) The name wasn't on our radar and you had no reason to think it was. 2) If I do like a name, I'm not going to avoid it because YOU'RE tired of hearing it.

  • Honestly, I am not a fan. It's very obviously not a "real" name -- I would assume it was someone's last name if I heard it. It's definitely not as out there as a lot of the ones I've heard, but any non-traditional name is going to be hit or miss. Your kid may love that he has a unique name or he may grow up to absolutely hate it. It would make a great middle name though!!

And congrats on the boy!! We're due date twins :)

I actually like it - but then again, I walked down the aisle to a song from FNL, so.... ;-)

  • We're doing Liam Daniel if it's a boy.  We're getting a lot of flak for it being too popular, associated with Hemsworth or One Direction, etc, but William is a family name and I like using the twist on it, so people can suck it. lol
  • Liam is #1 on my list! William actually is a family name on my side... There are 18 Bills! I've. Always wanted to use Liam but have gotten nervous about the growing popularity.
  • I'm a traditional name girl myself but I ADORE the non-traditional names that others name their children.  I like Riggins.  It's cute and you know there won't ever be confused with another child in his class.

Which song? I am a huge fan of the show.
