Soft, durable onesies?

Looking through the stuff we got for our baby shower, almost everything is 6 months and up, so I feel like I need to order a few smaller onesies before baby arrives in early May. Mostly looking for:

-- Soft
-- Durable
-- Inexpensive (money isn't tight, but it seems silly to spend a ton on onesies - willing to be convinced otherwise though)
-- No "cute sayings" if possible

Anybody have brands they prefer? Also, for an early May baby in DC - am I right in thinking that she won't need much in newborn/3 mo size besides short sleeved onesies and some swaddler things?

  • Honestly, this phase is so short that "durable" is not a concern to me.  I'm actually heading to the store today to pick up some plain white onesies, Gerber or Carters depending on the prices/sales.  At least with the plain white ones you can bleach the spit-up and poop stains!  Buy Buy Baby often has plain colored onesies as does an online company, Primary, but I don't have experience with either.

  • I second the Carters suggestion. Gerber is ok too, though they run small.

  • I liked Carters.  Agreed about Gerber, OK but ran small and the Carter ones seemed to hold on a little better.

I always wanted to like Burt's Bees but they just fit my son weird.

It's hard to say what she will or won't need.  I didn't really have much NB stuff for DS, but ended up sending DH and my brother to Target one afternoon to go stock up on some cute outfits because we were running out of clean clothes.  We were in 3 month things for a while.

I liked dressing him up every day though.  Not everyone does.

Swaddler things are hard too, you want to have some on hand but the baby could HATE being swaddled and want a sleeper or vice versa.  I have a few of each on hand now, and plan on picking up more after I figure out what works.

  • Carters and Gap on sale/clearance are affordable and softest in my opinion; they hold up well too. We used Old Navy ones last time as well, but even being washed in cold water, some of the patterns faded more quickly or got a little scratchy.
  • They make onesies, too, but I love Kickee pants jammies (coveralls or footies).  They aren't cheap, but they are so soft.
  • Gap are absolutely my favorite, especially the organics. They aren't cheap necessarily but they go on sale ALL the time.

  • Gap is actually having a 40% off everything sale right now... I just got 6 onesies for $33.
  • My nephew is 2 and a half and SIL just gave me all his baby clothes- most were in good condition and they were almost exclusively Carters. We also got most of LO's clothes at goodwill, since they're already broken in and have shown they last (and are cheap!).
  • Another vote for Baby Gap for soft and durable! I get the vast majority of DD's clothes at consignment sales for super cheap. Take a look around at used baby clothing, you'll find loads of stuff that meets your criteria.
  • Carter's onesies are the best for everyday wear - they run a little longer, are soft, and cheap enough not to feel bad just throwing out any that get permanently stained.  Also check out the Just One You onesies (line made by Carter's for Target) - the 3 or 4 packs are a great deal!  I always buy at least one pack of their white onesies in each size to use as undershirts.
