prog in oil

hi ladies
I re-introd few weeks ago. I just started my FET cycle did ivf in 13'. I was looking over my meds and cant believe the syringe for the prog in oil!! 18G any tips?? I also posted over in TTTC

I made the mistake of looking at the needle too... But we do what we must, right? This one my H will def. be administering to me! Good luck!!

My RE has me pulling up the PIO with the 18g needle and switching it to the 22g to inject myself. It's much easier on your butt, just takes a little longer to push is all.

Like PP said, you get the meds with the 18g and inject with the 22g. It isn't an easy thing. Today was my 43rd injection for this cycle (I had a previous cycle with only about 17 injections). It does get easier, but it will be challenging at first. There were times during my last cycle where I wanted to cry when DH was doing the injection (mostly because I knew the cycle had probably failed, not the physical pain of it).

I would definitely suggest having your partner do it for you. It is easier as he will be able to see what is going on more easily. I find it helps to stand on the opposite leg to help relax the side the injection is going in to. I also like when my DH counts to three before sticking me, and that he keeps the skin pinched the entire time (though when I do it myself I can't do that and it doesn't seem to make much difference). And have a paper towel ready before you inject to get any leakage/blood that comes out. It is normal and I bleed almost every time. Massage, massage, massage!!

I would also say if you have a heating pad, use it. If not, invest in one.

I also would run it under warm water to thin it some and I would put a heating pad on the injection spot.

It looks scarier than it is! Just think, you have more mass at injection site to absorb oil :-)
I expected it to be worse than it actually was. Tips: some ice area before shot, raise your leg of the side getting shot to take pressure off, use heating pad post shot, have person injecting stretch out skin before injecting and the quicker the better. Good luck

I did my first PIO (by myself, since DH is 900 miles away until Wednesday night) today. It was really hard, particularly since I had to do it on my non-dominant side. Hopefully tomorrow will be easier!

I'm glad to read about the leakage -- I was a little anxious when I was massaging the spot after the shot and felt a little oil. I'll have the ice and hot packs ready tomorrow morning, too!

I injected in the butt. I think the thigh would be a lot easier (we did that with some of my IM injections during my ER cycle, though my husband was able to do all of those shots!) but my nurse was adamant I do it in the buttock if at all possible.

Doing 10-20 squats post-injection helped me get the meds into the muscle faster and avoid the accumulation under the skin.

I also used a foam roller on my butt/hips which of course hurt at the time but kept the injection lumps at bay and relieved the pain in the long run. DH did all of my injections except once when I went to visit family and had my dad, who's a nurse, do it. (Dad was better at it.) DH only ever saw blood in the syringe when aspirating once in all the months we did it.

I had asked my nurses about injecting in the thigh as DH was going to be out and I was too chicken to do it myself in my butt, but they told me no. I ended up going into my clinic and having them do it a few times before I finally worked up the courage to do it myself.
